I was introduced to WH40K in 86/87 and had a few marines that I eventually assembled but gave up on long ago. About 2 summers ago, I picked up a few items and started to paint and learn the finer points of the hobby. I wanted something from the old school so I purchased a box of junk on ebay. In the bottom of the box under the old Rhinos and two newer Land Raiders, I found the tracks for a Mark 1 Land Raider which I always wanted but never purchased. I realized early on it would not be a true Mark 1 but somewhere in between the early and current version.

Its missing everything except the two sides with tracks but I had some newer Rhino and Land Raider bits as well as some plasti-card. If you are going to start converting stuff using plasti-card, I highly recommend a bag they they have called "Odds and Ends" which has a wide variety of strips, sheets, etc. I also suggest you get some hollow square style as it helps putting sheets together at right angles.

I looked at a lot of pictures to see how it should kind of look and started to build the cabin.

It seems that the flaw in the older version was the guns were extremely fragile and hence why they were probably missing. I decided that I would move the side sponsons back to the side door area and add an assault ramp in the front like the newer Raider.

Added some more layers of detail to the front and back.

That's the way it sits now. I am working on the side sponsons and a gun of some sort for the top. I am still not sure what chapter colors to paint it or even if it will be loyalist or chaos. Perhaps a Chaos Squat Raider?

Updates as they occur. Suggestions and comments welcome.

The original hull section (which you don't have) wasn't very detailed, so you're not missing that much.

Nice work so far, especially getting the sponsons to fit right.

Yes, the twin linked heavy bolters are going to be awkward to model - either an annoyingly tall turret on top (you don't happen to have a spare Leman Russ turret? something like that would work) or a hull mounting below the driver visor, which could look cool but be a pain to model.

Correct armament is not really an issue unless you plan to play games with it. If you do, prepare for rules pedants complaining that it has no side doors - just maybe you could fit some small doors in front of the sponsons?

At the very worst, this will make a great piece of abandoned vehicle terrain.

Finished off the side sponsons and twin-linked bolter for the top. I did not like the look of the two "boxes" on the ridge of armor at the front so I shaved them off. Also added some plasticard strips here and there and some rivets. I had built some boxy headlights too but I took them off. Maybe a single spotlight of some type to replace them?

Still unsure of chapter/color but will be loyalist.

Nice work - for a salvage job, this has turned out really well.

I am going with the hairspray/salt technique for weathering. Sponged down some black/brown/rust/umber/silver paint and then a quick few passes with some find sandpaper to knock down any "orange peel" effect as I want the base color to go down smooth in non-weathered areas. I did a bit of battle damage as well.

Still leaning towards an Ultramarines color theme but there are not a lot of small flat angled areas that meet up to show off highlights. Maybe some sort of white stripe on the sides too?

Really bloody cool. I like the compactness of it, feels like it would move over rough terrain better than the modern landraider. I like your paint job and weathered look.

I'd love to get a hold of the old landraider, I still have my first few squads of my Rogue Trader marines, but sadly, no LR.

Nice work all 'round.

Just stumbled across this. I'm trying to plan a papercraft RT era land raider, but with the front end changed up to incorporate an assault ramp.

Your work has been very helpful to me, and looks fantastic by the way!

Marvelous! I have no criticism to add, great fixing job and an excellent paintjob to wrap it all up.

Fantastic job on the rebuild, and the paint on it just takes the cake. I love the deep blues you've used - very old-school RT style for the Raider.

That's a great final product. Kinda bridges the gap between the two eras of Land Raiders. I like it.

Thank you,

Here are some pics from different angles if that helps.
