Subject: Big units firing from behind Aegis line

An issue came up last game:
Big unit of shooters (dark red) hides behind Aegis line and shoots at a tagret (dark green) on the other side of it.
the unit is alligned in many rows, as shown on attached pic.
The rows are further and further from the Aegis, spread out to reduce damage from blasts.
Will the Aegis provide cover for the target from shots fired by the back rows?
If so, how much of them? In the 5th ed there seemed to be a rule that you have to be within 2" from the obstacle so that your foe would not get cover from it. bt in 6th there is only "true line of sight"; so how does it work in this case?

You answered your own question, its true line of sight. You squat down and check LOS from all models in the unit to the model that the wound is being applied to.
This is pretty clearly covered in Determining Cover Saves page 18.

Abhorrent Grotesque Aberration

I'm going to ignore "ignores cover" and weapons that can fire outside of LOS. It doesn't matter what is blocking LOS, whether an aegis line or a steaming turd. If the target model is 25% obscured then it gets a cover save. It doesn't matter how far away that model is from the giant turd. The firing model could be 1" away and the target could be 60" away. If LOS is blocked by 25% then the target gets a cover save. If it's 100% blocked then you can't shoot at it. More to the point, the attacker could be a grot (or a crouching sniper) that is touching the turd with it's base but physically can't see over it. In this case LOS is 100% blocked and you can't shoot. Both the target and attacker could have their bases touching the wall of turds. If the attacker can't see the target then you can't shoot. If the target is blocked by 25% or more then it gets a cover save. Same thing with trees, hills, jujubeans, pop bottles, whatever happens to be in the way. You get down and look then take a guess as to how much of the target is blocked. The only thing that might be in the way that doesn't work like this is intervening models. At which point the target gets a cover save even if it's a warhound titan standing behind 4 grots. Excuse my potty humour. This question pops up at least once a week and is probably one of the clearest rules in the entire game.

remember, cover rules, only ONE of the shooters POV has to be obscured,
so if the farthest back guy's true LOS was blocked to the unit, and every single other guys was not, you still get cover.
silly but its RAW, i thought the previous editions cover rules were simpler and more belivable re monstrous ect

So they want us to model for advantage by making that short unit taller somehow so that it can see over the giant turd? That seems a little backwards as modeling for advantage is supposed be a serious offense.

1. Buy a laser pointer to demonstrate 'true line of sight' to your opponent
2. You cannot model for advantage if there is an official model then you must assume your custom converted guys are that shape/size when measuring line of sight.

Unless that farthest back guy just doesn't shoot.

Do I get it correctly, that basically all shooters but the front row shoots with cover? or the whole unit shoots with cover since some of it does?

The enemy will get a cover save from the entire shooting attack if even one of the firers LoS is blocked by >25%. You can choose not to fire with specific models in order to only shoot with models that have a clear (<25% covered) shot at the target in order for the enemy to not get that cover save.

You can also focus fire, choosing to hit only the models that are not in cover. BRB Pg. 18.
