Hi everyone,

I see a lot of tournaments being criticized for having an inappropriate amount of terrain. A lot of balance issues (especially against gunlines) in particular are said to be able to be remedied by 'more terrain' or 'more LOS blockers'.

It's really hard to describe what '2-3 LOS blockers' or '25% coverage' actually looks like. But the saying goes, 'a picture says a thousand words'. So, I ask you dakkanauts; submit some pictures of what you consider to be an appropriate amount of terrain for a tournament game. Perhaps also what you consider to be insufficient.

To get the ball rolling, here are some of the pictures from my gaming club, playing 1750pt tournament-style games. I won't comment on them myself, but feel free to post your own thoughts as you post your own images.

Thanks everyone!

Lots of LoS blocking terrain and places to hide. Though as Orks, I tend to bring my own mobile terrain in the form of kustom battlewagons.

That's a good lookin' spread Daedleh! I think the OP's boards look a bit thin, there are lines of sight straight across most of those setups. If both players agree though, then it's game!

Yeah, some of those OP boards look thin in the middle and are slanted to gunlines. There isn't a single place on the table a LR or BW could hide LOS let alone flyers.

Basically it can drastically impact transport armies when you can literally shoot anything anywhere on the board with no LOS blocking terrain.

I have seen MUCH MUCH worse terrain, but I think the OP's images are an example of 'NO LESS' that this.

I think the amount of terrain isn't the problem in those picture it's the fact that there is almost no LOS blocking pieces of terrain in the middle of the board. With the amount of cover ignoring weapons available in 6th it is imperative to have LOS blocking terrain.

Thanks guys.
In my pictures at the top, I agree that there is very little LOS blocking terrain. In fact a lot of the time there is even less terrain than this and I often have to go to the terrain cupboard to get a bit more - and that is with me playing as the gunline.
I'll see what I can do to introduce more LOS blocking stuff at my club. Yet my club is generally lauded for the quality and amount of terrain we provide at our events compared to other clubs in the area.

Any more examples out there? Bad examples are just as helpful as good examples!

I'll take some pictures this weekend - sometimes our tables are good on terrain, sometimes there's literally no LOS blocking... I always get stuck with a gunline on the latter.

Always have one piece of LOS blocking in the Center or two offsetting the center. And not just cover save giving, but TRUE LOS blocking. Otherwise it becomes a shooting gallery.

Unless there's some serious landscaping going on there that's not apparent, it doesn't look like there's any LOS blocking terrain.

This is one of my home boards, so not something I'd expect to see in a tournament. However, I think it's about right.

One of the things that really frustrated me when I was at Warhammer World recently, the boards ended up having too much terrain. My land Raider, for example, ended up having to take a dangerous terrain test every turn. There was very rarely any available routes for it to travel.

I always have this debate with my brother. I run khorne assault madness and he generally runs gunlines as a result he claims I abuse LOS blocking terrain and if I win its "only because you can hide behind buildings" lol but yeah. Here is the board we usually play on which we use varying building set ups on

I When ever I remember to I always try to place a large piece of terrain you cannot see through right in the middle of the board. It just makes the game less of a "how much of your army can I kill turn one" contest.

Thanks disel24, it actually folds out to be twice the size of what is pictured above, I have 12, 000pts of world eaters and khorne daemons and my brother has an even bigger force of grey knights and imperial guard... he is very shooty and im very choppy so terrain is always a matter of debate for us. I believe there should be at least 1 los blocker dead center of the board and another In each deployment zone. Then a few bits of cover to fill in gaps
