After playing Xenos for three years (Necrons) it may be time to buy a Space Marine army.

In the poll above, please let me know what Rules you'd use for a custom chapter. No CSM or Grey Knights

In the comments below, please tell me what you would buy to start a 1000 point force for the rules that you select.

Edit: added emphaisis

I voted Ultramarines and I'd buy this:

Then build whatever lists you wanted.

Thanks for being tremendously unhelpful to a serious question.

Well you've really given us nothing to work for me. If you ask the internet to think for you don't be surprised if your answers are not what you want.

Across the Great Divide

This is a really good question that has been asked in a really bad way. You want to play space marines, great. But with the new options in the vanilla codex and the unique styles of the others you can really build whatever you want.

What to buy comes down to what do you want to play. For example I play dark angels and vanilla marines (both IF and IH). So to go along with that I have lots of deathwing terminators and a lot of infantry for the others. I like to play the massed infantry style not a lot of vehiclee, bikes, or fliers. Now is it competetive not really but I have fun playing it and I know how to use it well enough to win games.

That is how you should decide what to buy. What play style do you want: bikes, tank spam, fliers, infantry, drop pod, terminator, long range, mid-range, up close and clawing their face off. It really come down to what you want to play.

So I can't really answer your question without knowing more of what you want. Sorry

I would first suggest that you figure why you want to play marines. Do you want a competitive army or something more fluffy? I would do some reading on the various chapters and figure out more what you want to do then come back and ask for some advice.

Ultramarines. I'm not a smurf fan by any stretch of the immagination. I can't spell well either. However, why ultras? It is true that other chapters do one thing better than the other. Troops on bike with scout, twin link this, the list goes on and on. However, Ultra Marines might not shine in one arear over others, but, they do everything well. UM are the all comers list of the SM.

"If you were starting a space marines army today... what would you buy and what rules would you use?" Is a different question from: "I really wanna play space marines... what should I buy?"

Please notice that I am asking the first question, and not the second.

I'm interested in your opinions, and if you want to share them... your reasons.

That might be "I'd buy up all the Dark Vengeance bikes that I can on Ebay and run them as White Scars, because I think that is a very competitive army." for example.

Bounding Dark Angels Assault Marine

Memphis,TN

Im also just starting 6th(3 year 5th player) I was looking at a tank heavy iron hands list because I already have some dreadnoughts and tanks, I also have some bikes and terminators so really I could play whatever.

I was also looking at a crimson fist army because sterngaurd are still nasty.

Before the new codex dropped I was going to run DA DAKKA spam
a LR with a cmd squad using a banner of devastation
30-40 marines
and units to compliment 200 bolter shots
and my reason just for that is because that's a lot of bolts flying to targets and its also cool to roll a bucket of dice for an attack

If you want to win as many games as possible, don't go Blood Angels (atm).
If you hate being outnumbered by everyone but GK, don't go Blood Angels.
If you don't like paying more points for the exact same units, don't go Blood Angels.
If you don't like an uphill struggle when playing competative players, don't go Blood Angels.
If you don't like half your army having a 12" range, don't go Blood Angels.
If you get annoyed easily when your best unique unit (apart from GK) suddenly becomes avaliable to 90% of the other chapters, don't go Blood Angels.
If you don't like special characters that got nerf batted so hard in 6th that GW got a homerun with each one, don't go Blood Angels.
However, if you are utterly freaking awsome, like a challenge, appreciate a difficult win more than an easy stomping, don't mind going against the trend, hate twilight with a passion and scream VAMPIRES DONT SPARKLE whenever its mentioned... well, welcome to the best army in 40k because Blood Angels are for you! ;-)

As to your question:
2 10man assault squads for backbone, libby with axe and pack, priest with pack, couple of baals, a raven and maybe some sniper scouts for home objectives.
