Here's the concept I have for my new chapter of Space Marines, The Emperor's Musketeers, an Imperial Fist's Sucessor. This is the first one I've done for them, definitely like going with a gravel/urban base, but trying to decide if I should come in and highlight more edges or leave it as is.

You need to take better pictures before alot of people will comment. The color scheme seems ok, but its hard to tell.

You need more light and a solid white background.

I do not understand the name "Emperors Musketeers." What exactly makes a man without a musket, a musketeer? Wouldn't "Bolt Gunner" or even "Bolt Gunneer" be more appropriate?

Right, but it's more classic, even as the weapons themselves progressed for a long period of time the King's Guard in France was still referred to as the musketeers. So I stuck with it, though I was pondering Blue Templars or Emperor's Riflemen so on.

I'm personally not digging the blue. It's a little too flat for me. A wash might help, but I'm not sure. Good job on your lining-in, though, that will really give the model some depth at a table-top viewing length.

Thank you! What kind of wash are you thinking? White or blend up to a white or light blue?

Asurmen Blue over the blue portions would give it less of that flat, cartoony look. When it comes to the white portions, I really can't help you. White is hands down one of the hardest colors to paint. (Along with yellow.) All I can recommend is many thin layers, as well as one of the Citadel basecoats. (Helps give an even color.) There are some good tutorials out there for white, but they would be more reliable than I would.

For whites I use a watered down space wolf or fortress grey. Ill take a watered down black wash applied just to the recesses.

As for the name, I prefer your alternates of Blue Templars or Emperors Riflemen. I do not think that the word musketeer exists in the 41st millenium to be honest.

As for the colors I like them, however having two contrast kneepads seems too much for me. I assume the gold one is the company marking? If so I would make the other knee white, it looks too busy.

Consider highlights. I like the stark lining seen on the blue. As for the white, consider picking up a 005 thickness micron pen, you can easily touch up or draw in your lining.

Haven't tried anything with pens yet, I might have to pick some up. The yellow is actually gonna be squad designation with black representing fifth company. The shoulder pads are my bane cuz I'm unbelievably bad at freehand and decals. >.<

If you were to get a Micron pen, which is pretty cheap http://www.amazon.com/Sakura-30081-Micron-Blister-0-20-mm/dp/B001CRI6O2/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1380757270&sr=1-1&keywords=micron+005+black

You would be able to easily freehand as squad marking on the knee pad or shoulders instead of the yellow. This would clean things up a lot color wise. It would be as easy to you as drawing a roman numeral on a sheet of paper.

Side note, what about two yellow knees? Think that could work? For some reason I'm really liking the yellow.

If you're absolutely in love with the yellow but willing to compromise on other options you could say that they are 2nd company rather than 5th company. You could then have one yellow and one normal kneepad.

If the yellow really speaks to you you could go for 2 yellow knees but that wouldn't be codex compliant and might not look awesome. In my experience a color that is not used as a minor accent and not used as a major color can tend to muddle things a bit. Worth a try though!

We shall see, I'm gonna swing by the store and see if I can grab a pen today after work, and then goof around with him a bit more. Other than two other schemes which came out looking like a cross between an ultramarine and a coal mine I haven't painted any others. So I've got more than enough time and energy to swap stuff around.

Looking good so far. The only advice I could give is that the paint looks a little thick (Especially the white). I don't know if you use a thinning agent or flo-aid, but it may be worth looking into getting some to help get a smoother coat. I can see how others would deem the blue to flat - but I think that can be rectified by sharper highlights and possibly a blue wash (as Jimsolo mentions) to tie it all in. Other than that - it looks most promising

Oh, and don't worry too much about the name. It's not my cup of tea personally, but I would imagine the word 'Musket' is still around in the 41st Millenium, even if it isn't in common usage. To say it wouldn't be around is similar to saying the word 'Minotaur' doesn't exist in the 41st Millenium as it refers to a mythological creature of 2000BC - but the Minotaur Space Marine chapter proves otherwise. The British Army still contains a Royal Regiment of Fusiliers - even though we have long dispensed of 'Fusils' (Flintlock Muskets).

Thanks for all the tips guys, and yea it's a bit thick, I need to water down a bit. I'm still working on him, gonna use all the tips here and see what I can do with him! Once I've finished all the way, highlighting and lining, I'll put him up again. Since it's a showcase I don't want to throw up a WIP I picked up some Asurman and Lothar blue to try some highlighting over the blue portions, and a selection of ink pens for recesses. Though to be honest I think I used to thick a pen. But it's looking better already!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
OK, DONE! I declare him finished. I can't go back and do more without stripping the whole thing. So Finale, here he is! Took the advice, tried some blends and edge highlights. Went and lined in the black and even added a logo onto the yellow pad. I decided I love my little yellow and black combo, so I'm gonna stick with that on the kneepads, makes me happy so I'm keeping it!

I'm definitely gonna need to work on my blending and highlighting, but other than that I am happy!

I think the musketeer name is cool. Kind of like The 3 musketeers from France. Dartanyon and whoever else. You should paint a golden Fleur de lis on the shoulder Pad.

Is the model a test model that has been used quite a lot? The paint seems quite thick. Thin out the black wash even more for the white, it looks way to dark to go well with it.

I think it might look better with the colors split down the middle instead of the torso one color and the legs another. But besides that i think that this is a really cool looking marine and I like the name alot. The blue looks much better after you touched it up and I like your highlights. The paint does look like it may be a bit thick in areas but you will have that on test models. I cant wait to see your army painted like this, keep us posted.

Will do! The first squad is on the painting block!

And grumpy, the middle us actually the same model, the paint is pretty thick as it's got more coats than necessary as I tweaked everything. I'm doing the next batch with my blacks done a little earlier so they might not stand out as much.
