So I'm assembling the 2nd edition metal Land Speeder and I've got a question.
Yeah, I can see how to assemble it. However, the stock flying stand it comes with seems like a disaster just waiting to happen. I'm figuring on getting some brass rod, pinning it to the base, and painting it black. My question is how thick should the brass rod be to support it? The kit's pretty much a chunk of metal the size of a child's fist.

Get a chunk of cork or something similar and solid and make it appear as though the speeder is going over a rockface?

I've thought about it, but I have a very, very specific aesthetic i'm going for with this particular army and I'm curious what width of rod is strong enough to hold it up. If it was for any other army, I would!

I used to have one of these, and the stock flying base worked fine. You might not have to worry about doing anything different.

Now that I've assembled it, there is a hole that actually goes fairly deep that a flying base would fit into. I didn't see it when it was in pieces, but it would definitely fit one now. Thanks Magos, it just understandably had me a little worried!

Yeah, I've never had any problems with mine, although I did transplant it onto the larger diameter base for extra stability. Never any problems with the stem, though.

Cool! I plan on mounting it on a 50mm square monster base, with a flying stand jutting out of it. That little hex base is just asking for trouble.

I've always used wire coat hangers for replacing the flight stand rods, should do the trick.
and cheaper than brass rod from most hobby stores too!

Two hours of glue and green stuff and callouses and blisters later, and I wouldn't part with my 3-pound hunk of metal for the world! I was understandably wary about such a heavy model on a flying stand

The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar
|
I've got that chunk of lead myself. It's been serving the Emperor on the flight stand it was issued with since back in 2nd edition.
I am in the process of trying to re-base my speeders though. Mostly for ease of transport. I like the ball and socket mounts, but years of use have loosened them up. I picked up some ring magnets from Home Despot, and trying those out with some furniture tacks to allow for some swooping. The bare tacks don't offer enough friction, so I'm back to the "too wobbly" problem. I put a thin layer of greenstuff on one tack, waiting for it to cure to see if it fixes the problem.

Large round base with 1/8" brass rod for the upright portion.
For transport, there is a chunk of foam that wedges in around the post between the model and base. Hasn't broken yet.
