I bought a bunch of their lava based, but I honestly don't know how to paint them to look good. These will be my first "non black" bases.

Any input is appreciated.

If it was me I would prime it in black, dry brush it with a dark grey (almost black) highlight.

Then paint the lava with white primer (so it covers the black easier) and paint the lava yellow, then blend orange from the edges of the rock out and then the same with red so the darker colours are closer to the rocks and the bright colours are in the centre of the lava.

Finally a drybrush of the red on the edge of the rock with a very light drybrush of the orange.

If you have access to an airbrush then use that for the lava blending and the rock 'glow' highlights.

girlpainting has a lot of good videos on stuff. I love the effects and techniques, it just takes a supreme effort of willpower for me to withstand her voice. Just skip ahead a bit til she gets to the painting portion.
