So basically I am deciding on either to go with imperial fists or crimson fists for allies to my cadian IG.

Using GW paints does any know what paints are needed and what the steps for painting them are, or if there are any tutorials for painting either of them. I havent really decided on which one I like more but I am looking into test painting a couple tactical marines or sternguard soon.

Thanks for the replies!

If you have an iPad the free tactical marine painting guide iBook from citadel spells it out color by color and step by step for the imperial fists. For the crimson fists you could just use the ultramarine guide from the same book and sub in red where it's needed.

Well, Imperial Fists require you to paint bright yellow marines, while Crimson Fists require you to paint blue marines with red hands. Given they both have the same chapter tactics, and you seem to like their schemes equally, then I spose it comes down to yellow being a particular bitch to get looking right, while blue is nothing but a basecoat and a wash.

I'd go with the blue guys.

Yellows not as tricky as its made out to be. Just has slightly different working procedure to some other colours that dont cover as well. Its almost always a bit transparent, and so needs underpainting in a colour that lets the yellow shine through (as opposed to black which gives us a ditry greeny brown)
White, or a beige, or brown basecoat seem to work best. depending on how bright you want the yellow to come out.

I suggest experimenting with your paints on some spare models, or even bits of sprue.
Use the sprue bits that have writing on so you can test out your washes over the yellows you can make to see what shading you like best too

One important thing to remember is to thin the paints down considerably and apply in multiple very thin layers, with yellow your looking at extra coats, thinning extra helps preserve the details.

Yes I was basically looking at the two as they were the same chapter tactics and Both are a different color scheme form my standard cadian IG army. So Ive been basically looking at which one might stand out more and if i went with IF I would get Lysander as a named character but I could essentially make a Termie CM or captain for the same points for CF. I then realized if I ever used sternguard I could take pedro and allow for some extra scoring units.

I think I am sold I the CF but I may still go with the IF. I did find that download by GW of painting space marines. I havent looked at it but my girlfriend sent me some pics of it and it looks like I will have all the techniques for painting IF if I wanted and Ive been searching online for videos on what gw paints I would need and the steps for painting the CF's as well.

I was also looking fluff wise as to which chapter has helped out the cadian IG more and if Im not mistaken I believe it is the IF.

So Ive decided upon the Imperial Fists, I got most of the highlight colors and layering colors down but According to the free how to paint space marines app by gw they list the primary yellow as averland yellow which to me looked a bit more orange than anything. Anyone have any suggestions on a better yellow by gw? or anyone have any pics of their own Imperial Fists they dont mind sharing?

Also the painting app doesnt explain what colors are used to paint the red eagle emblem on the chest plate, anyone know what colors are used for this?
