I'm looking for a medium grey primer much like the color in the link below. I have a ton of IG to paint and I just want to prime and paint the camo over top. The problem is Army Painter's grey is way to light. Anyone have a suggestion for a good (and hopefully cheap) primer?

GW - If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Tamiya makes a neutral grey primer in a can. If you have an airbrush then try the Vallejo Medium Grey airbrush primer. The tamiya primer is leaps above GW stuff but its more of a sky grey.

Try the other Army painter Grey (wolf) - it wouldn't be far off that although it might be too blue, but it's widely available. Plan B - check out your local halfords or car/DIY store for Matt Grey undercoat - just be careful how much you spray on. The colour would be OK but it might be a bit thick

How do you expect me to know what it is if you haven't painted it! Unpainted models are just proxies for the real thing

I use Halfords grey prima. it is very good. im not sure you have Halfords in the USA but any car hardware shop should have similar.

the stuff I use is cheaper then GW (no surprises there) and also a much better finish.

You live in the U.S. go to Lowes, Home Deport, Menards, they will have every color under the sun. Otherwise I'm sure there is a hobby shop close to your area that will have all kinds of paints you can use in a airbrush. Your link just went to the GW home page, but I use a Krylon primer that is a medium gray color.

I found Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Primer to give a nice smooth finish. I buy mine at Walmart.

Biggest problem with their gray primer is that it's almost the exact shade of the dark gray plastics that GW uses... so it can be tricky to make sure you've got coverage without overspraying. I've seen it suggested to do a light coat of white before you prime it in gray.

I want to make sure that the primer works well and doesn't cover over the details.

Seems someone brought up Krylon before I did. I love Krylon, it's pretty cheap and good (so long as you're using Krlyon primers and not regular paint, which I think means priming with either white, black or grey).

Getting coverage with grey on grey models is a little tricky though you've got that right.

I echo what the two Krylon recommenders above me said. It's a great primer, doesn't obscure details. Only problem is it's the exact same shade as the GW plastic. If you have faith in your priming technique it shouldn't be a big deal though

Another vote for Krylon. Just started using it and it's working out great so far. But yes, you need to have some faith in your primering!

The color of Krylon grey really is quite close, but the plastic has a sheen that primed areas lack. If you insist on total coverage (which I wouldn't, generally, but it's a valid concern if it's also your base layer of color), you can use that reflectivity and a bright light to check your work.

I would say that is fairly close to the rustoleum 2x cover primer from home improvement stores.

If you want to do it with an airbrush, you could probably mix some Vallejo Polyurethane Black primer in with their grey primer to darken it up somewhat since it's a light grey. Much cheaper than rattle cans, or at least the hobby branded ones.

This. Use it every time now and will never go back to aerosol...

I'm using Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover 2X Primer. The color is very similar to what you posted, and it's worked fine for me so far.

Rust-Oleum 2x Coverage Works ..

DO not mistake for Rust-Oleum Sandable Auto body primer (it will fill in the details )

Krylon also makes a line of flat camo colours that work well as primers/basecoats in one..
