I really like the new rules for Legion of the Damned but the models are super expensive and don't come with the weapon options I like so I decided to make my own.
Apologies for the lack of basing as I'm still undecided on whether to use my standard basing scheme or perhaps something a little most fiery. The black armour does have a slight red highlight to it but the camera hasn't really picked it up well, perhaps a shade brighter is needed.
The models are just standard tac marines with skeleton heads from my mates bits box, my thanks to Carl from the independent characters for the inspiration to make the models and his excellent "how to paint simple flames" tutorial. Linky: http://theindependentcharacters.com/blog/?p=3150

Love the flame effect, but the black looks to bland to me. Did you any drybrushing of grey etc for depth? Doesn't look like it from the picture. Even just watering down a grey and touching the high points would go a long way.
Skulls and flames look awesome.

Thanks for the comment, I did a dark red drybrush to try to get a bit of a deep glow effect from their unnatural aura but its pretty invisible in the pictures. I think I'll go back and brighten it a shade on the raised area's.

Gotcha, it does show up a bit, but I still think the a bit of grey would make it pop, it would also make the red glow more apparent too. At this stage just intensifying the glow would work too. I can see it now, pictures don't always do justice.

On your next batch, if you can get some arm or leg bits from your buddy, try to sand them flat on one side and glue the arm bits to marine arms and leg bits the same, that would be cool too...
But good job anyway!!

They look good...making them a bit more ghostly would take them to the next level. If you could green stuff some fire around their heads, they'd look proper Ghost Rider-ey

I was tempted to try that as I think flaming skulls would be perfect but my greenstuff skillz are pretty mediocre at best, there are flames around the collars of their armour but they don't really go high enough to frame the heads properly.

I can see this now that you bring it up (good idea, btw), but i think some edge highlighting on the armor plates with a deep grey / coal black mixture to bring up a touch of contrast, and then use a glaze of the red mixture might do the trick.
The conversions are nice, and the flame painting is great, its just that the rest of the armor plates kinda meld into one.
You're clearly a great painter though, so a touch more effort to differentiate the armor plates, and i think these are going to look stupendous.
One more suggestion... if you have access to a really fine micro-pen, filling in the eye sockets and cracks of the skulls will give the skulls greater depth and make them "pop" a little more.
Alternatively you can just paint those areas black, and touch up the surrounding area, but the micropen method will mean less touching up / clean up.

Yes this week I'm going to go back and add a more distinct edge highlight to the edges of the armour plates, also thanks for the pen in the eye socket tip. I wanted there to be a darker hole in the socket but didn't want to ruin the bone around the edge with a sloppy brush wobble.

Thanks Carl it was a really easy to follow tutorial, as I was doing it I was a little dubious as to how it would look as I started with some red triangles but when I got to the watered down yellow it just took shape and looked like real fire.
I've done a light grey edge highlight to them down and you guys were right it's made them pop alot more, I'll add a picture when I get home later, thanks for the advice.

Good thread, this has inspired me to try this myself with some spare multi-part marines. I might try and source more bone-shaped parts to bedeck them with, so I can get away with a few with normal marine heads instead of skull heads. If I get anywhere with it I'll do pics. Thanks again for sharing!

First off... awesome sauce to both sets of LotD. They look great!!
I have a bunch of the old, old LotD metal minis that I am about to do up for my chapter. The only problem with those is that the flames are molded onto the metal, but I think the same painting technique would work well.
I'm wondering where the heads you both used came from. Love those skelly heads. I have some old Warhammer skeletons somewhere, I think, wondering if those are the bits you used?
Again, great deal from you both, they are inspiring!

Thanks again for the comments, as far as skeleton heads go I got mine from a friend who plays Tomb Kings in fantasy battle so I assume they come from the standard skeleton kit for that army. I'd looked around at some bitz sites when starting the project and it seems skeleton heads are a premium item as they were out of stock everywhere I looked.
As with all kitbash projects a friends bitzbox is often your best bet.
As mentioned here's a picture of the newly highlighted models, shows up a bit better than before but I don't really like over the top highlights so it fairly muted. They are based in the standard scheme I use for my marine army, it's very boring but my ocd wouldn't let me field an army with mixed bases and I can't face re-basing 20K of marines

They look brilliant! The highlighting is just subtle enough, hard to do with black. Can't wait to get going on mine now! Thanks!
