Hello,

I looked for a thread on this so if it is a duplicate I aplogize. I was wondering if anyone had a copy of Deus Vult and what they thought of it. I have spent enough $$$ on rule systems that turn out blah or unenjoyable that I want to thoroughly do my homework before comitting. I read the review in Wargames Illustrated but to be fair it is a plug from the game designer. It truly looks awesome I have to say. I would like a rule set that is a step up from WAB, especially one that makes skirmish more intense.

So if you have experience with it I would love to hear your opinion. Thank you.

My Google-fu found this this review.

Seems like he enjoys the rules.

Thanks for posting that Infinite_Array - interesting review, I wonder what kind of scale (in terms of troops on the table) the game is played at?

Wonderfully evocative setting in any case..

I bought it a while ago, and it's a beautiful book, with some interesting looking army lists. That said, I haven't got around to actually playing a game of it, so I can't say how it plays.

Well, seeing as Fireforge produces plastic 28mm Crusades figures, I'd be safe in saying that Deus Vult is intended for 28mm miniatures.

I've played Deus Vult a few times now. The command structure keeps both players involved as play alternates between divisions. The random leader thing is fun and prevents min/maxing during army building. Games do take a bit longer to finish than WAB or HC.

I only wish they would put out more army lists. The book comes with 2 full sized army lists for the 1st Crusade & partial lists for other groups. It would be nice to see a 3rd Crusade or a Byzantine list.

That was badly worded on my part - I meant to say in terms of scale of battle, i.e how many units/troops on the tabletop in a standard game, are we looking at something Hail Caesar size here, or something smaller?

Scale is in line with WAB, so a little smaller that Hail Caesar. The recommended table size is 6x4, which makes for a rather tight deployment. However, the game has various rules for off table deployment, so that helps with the space crunch.

Ah! My bad.

Yeah, I think Ran's got it.

OP, if you're interested, also check out Clash of Empires and War and Conquest, both of which have been called WAB's 'successors'.

The attacking unit is the only one rolling dice to kill the other unit. This leads to some funny rules like counter-charge, where the attackers 1's count as hits against themselves.

The one sided battle takes a bit of getting used to, but it plays well with the command system where players alternate activating divisions. The ABABAB style of play puts a lot of pressure on a player to choose the correct order for division activation.

I have the rules and they seem very well thought out. I would like to try them out, but am also waiting for latter lists.

However, as infinite array mentions, Clash of Empires are worth a look and have a new Crusades supplement with a full spread of lists available on pre-order.

Everyone, thank you for your time and consideration in replying to my post. If you happen to get a game in for this system please consider doing a battle report, which I will certainly do if and when I purchase Deus Vult.

Cheers!

Here's my post on the game - http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?386178-Deus-Vult-First-Impressions

Note that I still haven't had a chance to play it yet.

As everyone should know by now, Arabs are not Fireforge's next release. Instead, the Hordes of the Golden Khan (aka Mongols) are on their way. And apparently Fireforge will be releasing a "quick and dirty" PDF list for them. Their forum appears to suggest that this will be followed by a more comprehensive dead tree release focused on the Mongols and the Teutonics.
