A few pics of my devastator squad, only been painting a little while so comments and tips would be helpful.

It's a good basic start, the bases are quite nice, but they could do with a fair bit of improvement. The armour would look good with a bit more highlighting, and certain details such as the Sergeant's face and the Plasma coils are very devoid of depth, a simple wash and highlighting job would really make them stand out.

Good tabletop quality !

To bring it to the next step here's what i'd do:

1) Be sure to thin your paints. Don't need anything super fancy at first, just water, though there are mediums and thinners and flow improvers out there as you get better.

2) dry brush and highlight - take the plasma coil. take that base color, mix a little white, and drybrush that area, the ridges will pick up the lighter color while the recesses stay darker, it'll create a good effect.

3) Wash - use washes to give the effect of depth and shadow, thin the wash and don't over do it. The bald marines head is a good example, a black wash on the face mask will bring out detail, and a flesh wash on the face will do the same. Also, i know painting eyes is a royal bitch, but flesh colored eyes detract from an otherwise clean and good paintjob.

4) To get rid of the shine, blast these guys with a matte sealer (i like testors personally) sprayed very thin and gingerly.

Cheers for the comments all.

Im still trying to get to grips with thinning the paint, i always seem to end up too thin and it jus pools in the recesses with no coverage.

Again something im still working on, need to try and build up the drybrushing, cant seem to get the paint to "take" if you know what i mean. the highlighting is a bit more of a case of being worried im adding too much/in the wrong places.

I do use washes on the armour and metal parts, and since these have developed my technique on faces since these. Eyes are a real problem, i think i need a smaller tipped brush as they just come out like blobs every time ive tried. the plasma coils is also something ive been wondering about how to improve

Matte sealer is definitely something i need to look into, any links where i can buy some?

Also take a look at the Deathwing Knights and see if you think there an improvement?

A quick wash to the plasma coil would help.
And tone down the transfers
Other then that very good start.
And Matte Sealer can be found at your local hardware store. I get mine for 5$
