I'm running a 5 man Terminator squad with Lysander, to deep strike or walk upfield. Is there any sense in equipping a heavy flamer? Cyclone and AC both seem expensive, and the heavy flamer seems like it would be useful for overwatch, occupied buildings and hordes, which Terminators really can get weighed down by. Thoughts?

Take 4 TH/SS terminators and 1 heavy flamer and boom. Amazing assault unit

Except you can't do that.

With Lysander, I'd probably put him in a unit of assault termies for that 3++ if they're walking or spending any time in assault.

The problem is a storm bolter doesn't compare to a storm shield and the ability to strike at the same time as anything you come up against in the second round, even if you have to pay 5 more points.

A 5++ invuln isn't something you can rely on, a 3++ is. With the 5th ed nerf that Terminators only got one heavy weapon per 5 men they well and truly got destroyed. Why bother paying all those points just for an assault cannon or heavy flamer? Why not just take Sternguard or another unit that does the same role far better and for far cheaper? They're mediocre at best, do absolutely terrible in a lot of scenarios (e.g plasma, Riptides, any CC unit worth its salt) and at that are absurdly expensive and list crippling to implement.

If you're looking for a hard hitting, hard to kill squad that diverts attention and wrecks face, take a Termie Assault Squad with at least 3 Hammernators.

Why can't you? The only limit is 5 terminators per HW. Take 5 give 4 TH/SS.

Go to page 172 of your Space Marine Codex and then slap yourself.

Done that yet? Good. They're completely separate units, Terminator Squads and Terminator Assault Squads. Heavies are exclusive to the former.

Sorry had a brain derp. The slapping myself comment was not needed.

For some reason my brain told me you could pay extra for TH/SS on terms

Heavy Flamer is great in a Dark Angel army: precision deep strike on turn 1 with Belial and a mix of SS, the HF is twin-linked upon arrival; great for clearing up pesky units in cover. Very hard to pull off the same trick with vanilla marines though, I'd stick with assault cannons or CMLs.

Really?
Everything today comes in either 5 man blocks stuffed up in flying necron croissants or in endless rows of disgustingly OP wave serpents.
The past fun armies of actual infantry vs infantry are long gone in favour of geedubs need to sell op xenos transports and the ever bigger op walkers.

The only remedy is if SM sales drop so much that the gw design morons realize they just shot themselves in the foot since nobody sane enough will ever take anything else then taudar to competitive gaming.

Actually no, Go to page 99 in the Dark Angels Codex, slap YOURSELF, as DW (only terminators I use) CAN take 4 TH/SS and a heavy flamer.

Oh really? Go to the first post in this thread where the OP discusses termies with lysander (who isnt in your codex so obviously we arent discussing DA) and then slap yourself on the other cheek.

Allies but I digress, it why I thought he could, I don't play vanilla marines and I forgot they work differently

hey guys how is the slaping going?

now my 2 cents are:

terrminators are better with cyclone missile launcher...it costs a bit more but it does a lot of damage!...heavy flamer prolly wont get a chance to fire at all (only 1 time when ull get chargerged...cause U WILL get charged!!

i attach to them a libby in termi armor for some extra survivability and i footslog them across the battle field..

strange thing is that usually they are the only squad surviving any game.. and at late game they really hurt the oponent!

especially that cyclone launcher!

on the other hand sternguard will prolly die in the first enemy shooting round or the 2nd...they cost the same amount of points and they only manage to kill half or 1 unit before they die...defently not worth their points..

it is all about survivability!!

better have 5 termies that will keep all game long and keep firing that cyclone launcher...than 6 sternguard with combis that will insta die the moment they apear with their drop pod

I think that's enough with the "Slapping" trend, OK?

I guess that depends more upon how much of the overall sales picture 'competitive gamers' make up though...
