hey guys i'm starting infinity and i want to know what army i should get. i want a PanOceania but i feel that everyone collects that army and i don't really want to play my own army at gaming clubs. that's the case then i might have to pick between the nomads and the combined army.

There's so much variety within factions that really, just go for what you like. For that matter, I'm the only PanO player around here, and we're drowning in Nomads and Ariadna (at least that's how it feels).
What to get? well, don't get the PanO starter, IMO. Acon starter is a much better starting point, pretty much AOK for reg PanO too.
Next up is the support box.
after that, a sniper and an HMG/spitfire for whatever basic infantry you have, IMO.
From there, pretty much none of us will agree anymore

I play PanO and I'm the ONLY player in my area of this army. We have more Ariadna, Nomads and combined players locally with QK bringing up the rear.
There were a few others about an hour away from me (separate club, since folded) except after their club went away, they sold their stuff.
Pick the stuff YOU want to play - there's enough variety even in a vanilla list that two players will probably not have the same list (unless they are playing ASA in ITS, in which case, they probably will because of limited specialist options).

Greetings
JSA, Nomads, Aleph. We're a small community so the percentage can easily shift, but those three armies are among the most popular. Many players have another force in the bag, just in case.
Infinity offers great diversity in styles, so unless you're playing against the same army list, you wont easily get bored.

Oddly enough, there's a lot of Ariadna and Haqqislam, with only 2 Pan Oceania and 1 active Yu Jing player in my community.

Something to note - Infinity is fairly cheap because of the small model count. If you really want PanO but there's a lot of those players in your area, simply make a second army you like as well. That way if you want to avoid a mirror match, take that army out instead.
Infinity is one of those games where grabbing a second army isn't just good for variety, it's downright affordable. The blessings of a skirmish game.

Either get the Shock Army of Acontecimento starter, or read up on the PanO tactica, let us know which dudes sound best to you and we'll get back to you on good starting purchases.
The PanO starter has 6 outdated sculpts (possibly not the orc, but the rest is pretty much slated for replacement IIRC) and, IMO, isn't even that much of a fun starter to begin with.
The one thing everyone will buy is the support box, but that's hardly something to play a full game with on it's own

Compare the Croc man in the original starter (guy in the middle)
With the new miniature:
Still like the ORC and Fusilier sculpts, but I should imagine this starter set will probably be replaced at some point.

I don't recommend jumping straight to 300 points. Few thoughts on the collection: - Needs a hacker to field REM. - Too many Knights. You can pick up to 0-1 Knight and 0-1 Hospitaller Knight. - Needs more orders, at 300 points you really want a full combat group. - Free army builder, it's a bit clunky to start but it's simple and fast: http://anyplace.it/ia/ia.html - REM are great but Crock Man, Brethren or Akal commando would be also nice to include. - Interesting choice with Pathfinder REM. I wouldn't field both of them, Sierra is one of more user friendly models. - Very low on AoE.

First and very important, we don't go over even 1pt in Infinity. As there are order monkeys as low as 4pts in this game and 5pts is a better weapon or mines. 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 are what you should build lists for. Now the list, well Knight got most of it and while 8 order is OK at 300pts, it is not OK if you just learning. But, you should be playing at the 100 and 150 point level to get the basics down to start.

200 pts is, IMO, a *much* better place to start. MO+ de Fersen is a relatively brave place to start, IMO; OTOH, it's a fine base to expand from. (Though TBH, de Fersen might not be the most ideal first purchase).
7 orders @200pts can be done, but it takes skill. TBH, I'd take the MO starter, the support pack (you always want the support pack. always.), and maybe a spitfire order sergeant.

Not an MO player myself TBH so little experience here, but I'm sure that's at least a good place to start - and if MO is something you like, you'll be using everything in that list on a regular basis.
I know playing with a link team is something a lot of folks advise starting players not to, but if you read up on the rules it's not all that hard - I sure had a boatload of fun playing links my first ten or so games.
de Fersen is a rather expensive (points-wise) model which, while useful, is something I'd not readily use outside of 300pts.
For starters, you're combining your a-list rambo and your hacker - it just takes a pretty big amount of skill/insight in what you can, and most of all cannot, pull off safely so I'd not go there yet.
purchases beyond this could be either a magister knights box (again, that is a tricky proposition to play but a bag of hammers when it hits ), something hackery ( de Fersen might well pop in) along with a REM or two (PanO REMs are one of our strong suits!); perhaps something which includes auxbots (you can use them with MO sergeants; muchos annoying for your opponent, trust me almost as good as auxilia!) and then maybe branching out beyond MO.
...anyway, by that point you'll be picking your own next purchases; infinity looks complicated until you've played a few games, then it's clear as day

One of the big problems, that I have experienced first hand, with MO is that there are limited Lieutenant options. There are a few knight choices, or a Fusiler. I invariably go with a Fusilier as I personally do not want my LT to be in the thick of the fighting, which is where the knights usually are.
Magister knights are best when in the link team as they have little in the way of long range weaponry besides a two-shot Panzerfaust. Those link team bonuses are great for helping make sure that little rocket can do as much damage as possible.
I'd definitely recommend using more Order Sergeants at first because then you can have plenty of orders for those heavy hitting Knights, like the Teuton. Trying to stick a bunch of knights on the table is like playing musical chairs with 20 people and 1 chair, not enough chairs to go around.
MO is my secondary choice, behind my main Vanilla PanO force. They definitely take some getting used too, but if you can get them into CC it'll be lots of fun.
Also, I'm the only Infinity player around here. As such, being a PanO player, everyone plays it.

One of the things I know my friend does not like about his Aleph is his Lt is almost always known. There's little chance to play Lt shell games on basic infantry that you can comfortably hide and ignore like a Ghulam or Fusilier, and sometimes the Lt ends up being something you want out there killing things. Sometimes you just have to accept your Lt will be in a dangerous position and plan around it without wasting that models potential.

The Croc Man from the starter looks like he's having such a great time. Someone should replace his gun with a can of beer.
As for the topic, just do what I do and get a little of everything. Why settle for one faction? Just start buying whatever looks cool and go from there. Eventually you'll have a functional force.

Your Lieutenant is a multiwound infantry and most of the force is religious. It's quite of a boon to have. Ideally I'd recommend some OS with Auxbots. However it might be difficult since this package doesn't exist. Crusader Brethren with or without HMG is worth considering. Link team of Magister Knights can be a nightmare to deal with but it can also work against you. It's a lot of points and you need to spread them in a bubble. DeFersen is great. I'd still always want to have minimum of 8 orders. Orders are simply too good to pass in my book. REM are great in any force. Personally will play only one faction. My style could probably be more fitting with Haqqislam or MRRF but not really keen on either of them. Maybe MRRF but considering rumors on Fusilier and Squalo resculpts appearing in the near future my mind becomes set. Perhaps, if I'd be a wealthy man.

The second just looks like "generic serious guy"
I wanted to get some Croc Men, but I'm gonna pass now if thats what they look like.

I kind of see your point Dakkamite! Not my cup of tea personally, but he is a good relief to the 'guy with rifle stock up to shoulder' pose.
You can still get a lot of the now out of production minis (either ebay, or some shops even still have stock of them), I'm sure those guys will be kicking around for a good while yet.
