Hi, i'll be posting progress shots as I develop my Imperial Fists army. So far the only model I've started is the terminator librarian which I'll be posting updates on. Currently i'm stripping paint from my old black templars to repurpose as IF and Dark Vengeance will be on the way soon - Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists is the plan there. Hope you enjoy following, i'll try to update as often as possible

basecoat + wash

added blue

added red and metal along with the beginnings of a face

i'll be getting my DSLR and tripod out soon, been too lazy so far

thanks for looking

*sigh* dark vengeance is coming from Milsims but is on backorder so won't arrive for ages. On the plus side i'll be buying more dettol to strip templars tomorrow so will have more minis to work with. Got 2 tactical squads, 5 assault marines, 5 scouts, around 5 bikes and a few characters like Helbrecht all ready for glorious yellow

Huzzah for Librarians whose robes are blue where their armour is not. I really like the contrast between the lighter, more turquoise blue of the force weapon and the deeper, richer blue of the robes. Perhaps a slightly brighter edge highlight on the yellow armour?

hello again - thanks for the views and comments got more finalised shots, added more highlights as suggested and touch ups in general. Tried to make this like the GW turntables on their site, can't wait for more marines to be ready. I've also ordered the new yellow paints as right now i've just been working with 2 vallejo yellows and iyanden darksun so this should make things easier. Also got some weathering powders on the way from kromlech in poland but will probably be ages til i see that.

also if you are planning on starting a yellow army of any kind I cannot recommend the GW glaze 'Lamenters Yellow' enough, great for bringing the colours back, the other glazes are also brilliant.

Apologies if your internet is terrible, here are some pictures

Looking good.

But it also looks as if you've got an open light source shining on the model, creating nasty reflections. The easiest way to block off direct light is using white paper. Either 'drape' it over your model photographing box, or on the lamp itself.

It is in a photo tent with a light shining down on it but i think the main issue is the matt varnish i sprayed on it so it wouldn't chip (metal model -.-) The varnish makes it shiny which is kind of dumb.
Can anyone recommend a varnish that actually makes the paintjob matt and preferably on ebay.

I've heard Testors Dullcote is good

meph, could you please post a picture of the 'draping' white paper technique? Might help while i get better varnish

Ah, varnish, that explains.

I actually use satin varnish as matte can sometimes dull down the subtle colour tone an shading.. Either GW's or any other decent brand. I've recently bought a bottle of Vallejo to use with an airbrush but haven't tried that one yet.

My high-tech photo studio, hold on to your seat, here it is!

I just use an A3 size paper 'squeezed' between the pages of a sketchbook with just a few cm's and arc/pull it down to the side as much as possible, making sure there's no gap between the paper and the back cover. Nowadays I've taped an A4 to the paper so I can more easily box it in. The front side is open, but my body blocks most of the light from there when taking the picture.

I prefer to use natural sunlight as it's the best light, and the depending on the lighting conditions I change the shutter time. Anywhere between 1/200" in bright sunlight to 1"30 in the autumn gloom we had today (check my started threads for some pics if you want some examples). To take pictures with a long shutter time, you definitely need a little tripod (around 10-15EUR), and you need to take your photo's with a 2 second delay so you hand is not touching the camera.
Oh, and my camera's nothing fancy either, just a little Canon Powershot A590 that cost me 160 euro about 5 years ago.

looks good lol - i'll have to try it out once i get decent varnish. Also ordered a shutter remote so i don't have to touch the camera so better pictures huzzah! Bikes are fully striped now, going to convert them into quads or trikes though or even just make the front elongated like a chopper

Haven't posted anything in a while thanks to work and uni so have some images of a land raider that arrived yesterday as compensation. I have avoided spraying it with the shiny matte varnish this time, will have to drive up to brisbane to get the Testors Dull Cote. Dark Vengeance has also arrived which i've begun painting and expect some Iron Warriors soon too. Ordered a forgefiend which should be fun

before and after, apparently 'pro painted'

Looking good man, that's one beat-uo-looking tank.

The OSL on the guns seems a bit, ermm, much, to be honest. It gives a feel like it's being lit from the top and not from the sensor/camera pod as the lighting 'drops' straight from the sponson onto the guns, if that makes sense.

Few more highlights on the Land Raider and you're set, love te weathered look and the light effect is amazing.

You carry the Emperor's will as your torch, with it destroy the shadows.

have to agree with you meph on the OSL (bit of a noob with that technique) and yes, still needs highlights. Might do a touchup tomorrow. Also will post an army shot or two

Myeah, I never painted osl myself but coming from graphic design and 3D modeling background i do have trained eye for things that look 'off' or not. ^_^

From time to time it seems a counter-intuitive balance between what looks good and is correct. If you'd project the light beams from the lenz, it would probably even barely touch the tips of the guns because of the large overhang of the sponson. Same goes for the headlights, but the overhang of the track covers is not thàt much so it's not that off-looking, but still the beams of light would touch the tracks probably a good cm lower.

That being said, I do feel that your gradients and lighting intensities are vèry good. It's just the source projection that's off.

Thanks Xanthe! I haven't tried weathering techniques yet. Do you have any good tutorials I can read/watch?
