Help me understand what page 109 of the BRB says:

"If you wish, your army can include one allied detachment for each primary detachment in your army (normally one, but if you're playing a larger game this might be rwo). As with the primary detachment, all units in the allied detachment must be chosen from the same codex, and this must be a different codex to the one used for the primary detachment."

So for games under 2000points, I can't have Eldar allying with Eldar, or Tau allying with Tau?

Page 77 of the SM codex allows me to ignore this rule and ally with a different chapter, but I can't field T'au + Bork'an or Biel-Tan + Ulthwe hosts?

Pretty much correct.

There are also exceptions popping up in some of the supplements... Farsight can ally with Codex: Tau, for example. But you can't take Codex: Tau allied with Codex: Tau.

You cannot ally with the same codex (unless its SM with different tactics), but you can ally with supplements.
For instance:
CSM + Black Legion
Tau + Farsight
Eldar + Iyanden

IIRC Eldar cant ally with Iyanden. Correct me if im wrong. Theres no exception from the "cant ally with parent codex" in the iyanden supplement.

I am curious about this as well. I believe it says in the Farsight supplement that it can ally with the Tau codex, but the Iyanden supplement says it cant ally with other supplements, but the Eldar codex isnt a supplement. Any other thoughts on this?

Seeing that it is technically not a Supplement I'd give it that Iyanden can ally to Eldar codex.

That's not how it would work. If the Iyanden supplement is considered an expansion of the Eldar Codex then Iyanden cannot ally with the Eldar codex. It also cannot ally with other supplements for any codex.

Yup, the supplements aren't new codexes, they're just supplemental material for the parent codex. So the only way you can ally a supplement army with an army from the same codex is if the supplement has a rule that specifically says you can.

Iyanden doesn't.

Another chapter in the SM codex? Yes, that permission isa granted in the SM codex.

Imperial fists in the SM Codex? That would depend on whether the supplement specifically allows it or not.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
