I usually play at 1k, the games are short and I'm able to field a different set-up each game if I want.
1500 clogs the board at times and I feel the casual player starts to miss a lot of small rules when trying to manage that size army.
Generally I just like getting 2-3 games in a session, 1500 doesn't really allow that.

I leave it up to my opponents. Some are just starting a new army and won't have much. Other times people want to try custom games.
My personal preference is about 1500. Enough that I can throw in a crap ton of gants, but not so much as the game drags on for 4 hours.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I love playing at the 750-1000 because I can squeeze in plenty of games in one day but I do also like 1850 because it makes you choose wisely your units. Now for fun 2500 just to add stuff I normally wouldnt.

Board size usually dictates how many points my friends and I play at.
Although we play on a 6x4 table we find that 1250-1500 works out pretty well. We get to bring some cool mini's and the range is such that we're not shooting the gak out of each other turn one.

Biggest I've played yet is 1334, because that was exactly how much I had painted
To motivate myself to paint more I set myself a rule to not play with any unpainted models from my side.
Otherwise, when toying with list ideas, I think somewhere between 1500 and 1999+1 seems good

1500. It's big enough to have some options and decently sized armies, but small enough to make you choose your units wisely. Also games larger than this tend to drag on too long.

I kinda look at it like this. The smaller the game, the more important each and every model tends to be. On larger games, you will field more models, so every choice taken tends to be diluted into the army as whole.
Is it just me, or do certain army lists do better vs. other army lists as they tend to come into their own? It Seems to me that as points values fluctuate, certain armies can do better vs. other armies.
Anyways, back to the point of the post. I like games at any value where it is at least 500. Any game less than 500, you might as well play Kill Team or Necromunda. But not much more than 2000.
Since I am still working on my IG, I have just picked up the model I needed to do a 2000 point game. Granted I only have about a little over 1k in IG assembled, but I am working the models up.
As my army develops, I could see myself playing Apocalypse games as the models get assmebled and painted/finished.

As I can play anywhere almost any points level comfortably with the minis I take to most games, I always leave it up to my opponent. The most common are 1000, as that way we can usually get 2-3 games in a 5 hour session, or 1500, as it allows us to use more of our collections. I generally don't like playing solo games at more than 2500, though, or team games with more than 2000 a piece, as the board gets too clogged too fast.

I dislike lower than 1500pt games because it is extremely difficult as a BA player to pick the units you want/need at that level since even our troops are so expensive. We will often have as few models as GK however all our models wont have power weapons, psychic powers, deamon defences, +1st to most of our shooting etc.
The two is better than double rule means if we take 2 of a unit we want for effectiveness, well that's pretty much all our choices done since the remainder of our points have to go on compulsory slots.
There are also many units I like which you have to build other units around. Take the death co dread for example, 125pts without upgrades, need a minimum 100pts worth of dc to take him, and realistically a stormraven to deploy him if hes ever going to see combat. So if I want to take a dc dread i have to fork out a minimum of 425pts, more really since those dc will require a transport or jps too, and a pf to make them as effective for their points as possible. So the cheapest upgrades. would be a rhino and pf. So already, just because I took a dc dread Ive spent half my points of a 1000pt match, dont have any scoring or a hq, have 1/8 of my points invested in a cc dread that will assault earliest turn 3 and 1/5 of my points invested in a flyer that won't show up until turn two earliest. And thats only one example.
You look at any 1k BA list on here. 90% chance that it will include 2 10man assault squads with upgrades, a jp librarian, 1 or 2 sang priests, a scout or dev squad for back field objective holding/ ranged support. And then another unit picked from: baal predator, stormraven, dc, podded furioso dread or sternguard. All 1k BA lists run to that formula because anything else is ineffective at that points level. And its just boring. Automatically Appended Next Post: My necrons however do 1k pretty nicely. 3 abs giving av 13, 5+ jink, 12 st7 tesla shots and 6 gauss cannon shots for 270pts, throw in a couple nightscythes with 5 men warrior squads and I still have 400pts to play with!

I like 1500 - I find it's a good balance between a larger game where you can field a variety of units, and a smaller game that can be played in a reasonable amount of time.

1500 ,1850 and 1999 are what is played in tournaments here . So most people have armies that size . 1500 is the most popular of course , because it is cheapest.

1850 Pts because that's usually a somewhat tournament 'standard' so I attempt to build to this. There's also the whole 1999+1 mentality since apparently NO ONE is happy with the double FOC from the rulebook, or at least governing it in a tournament... which is understandable. Why 2000 pts is the magic number for double FOC is beyond me though.

1850 seems to be the norm around me, not sure why. As an ork player i hate that point level because im almost taking my entire FOC unless i run duo bikernobz + boss lol. The orky redundancy kinda falls off after 1250 i feel.
As Tau though i love it because i can bring both of my big gun tactics and still have proper support/troop control lol

I build to a 1500pt core, with extra units to swap out or add to for bigger/different games. Also, I like to have pre-built list at 500, 750, 1000, 1750, 1850, and 2000, just for pick-ups or for tweeking for tourneys.
And then there's the 20k-30k Apocalypse lists, because Titans are too fun to leave home.

I play 2000 points because I play thousand sons so to have a rounded out army I need 2000 points or at least 1500 because my troops are so damn expensive. First I need to add the TSons then I need lots of cultists to add numbers to my army, so to make my army something more than a blob of troops I need them points
