I vote Night Lords. Ever other Legion is a dystopian version of our society, the Night Lords are our version, religious preachers who such the population dry promising false hope, crime and gangs, love of vigilantes while at the same time hating them, the only primarch with an anglo saxon name. Hit and run tactics that seem more in line with the American style of warfare than running in screaming or Prussian discipline.

If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it?

That's the American style of warfare at least during the last century, bomb the enemies cities, don't grant enemies honorable deaths but instead give them white phosphorous and napalm, destroy morale through the process, use our navy to strangle their supply lines like we did against Japan, spray agent orange across the country side. Its been our strategy since the Indian Wars, through the Civil War, through WWII and Vietnam. We historically been somewhat of a disorderly military. Admiral Donitz remarks "the American Navy excels because combat is chaos, and Americans practice chaos on a daily basis.

I think its why I enjoy reading about the night lords because its like reading a dark version of your self.

Theirs this Pic on deviant art showing a Night Lord making an off color remark to an Imperial Fist, something seemed kinda American about it.

I'm not entirely sure where you got the idea that the USA prefers hit and run tactics and killing all of the civilian support for an opposing army.

I am by no means defending our recent ( last 30+ years ) of armed activities; however we seem to prefer destroying an enemies capability to wage war head on with overwhelming force while actively trying to avoid engaging any non-combatants.

The only units I'm aware of that currently use hit and run are possibly the elite units such as the seal teams. The USA has one of, if not the, most capable armed forces on the planet.

That said, we have used a variety of strategies in the past 100 years. All of which depended upon the enemy we faced and the goals laid out by our political leaders. In WW2, the US navy was nearly decimated in a single day. Because of this, hit/run tactics were absolutely necessary to take down a highly capable foe while we rebuilt. It wasn't our preferred way of doing anything, just what was necessary.

So, no, I wouldn't pick the night lords.

None, as no Astartes Chapter (as far as I am aware of) are based on the Native Americans.

Ok, fine, I get what you mean; and to answer your question, to compare the US military to a SM Chapter is like comparing the U.S. Marines Corps to the U.S. Army... as the former is attached to the U.S. Navy and the latter is, well, the bulk of the U.S. ground military, they utilize different strategies. Not to mention the U.S. military also includes the Navy, the Air Force, and the Coast Guard. it's pointless to compare any nation's military to force to just one military formation.

In reality, the military organization of the IoM is mostly based on real-life counterparts. Any professional military in the world has at least an Army that consists of a multitude of divisions (The Imperial Guard and its regiments), the Elites (Space Marines), Navy (Imperial Navy), Air fore (eh... still the Imperial Navy), and then the domestic militia and local defence forces such as the U.S. national guard services, and the coast guards (the Planetary Defense Forces). So, no Space Marine Chapter is like any military of any nation.

While cultural-wise, the stereotypical maverick yet honorable Marines as portrayed in a good number of Hollywood movies, are pretty typical of most per-heresy era legion astartes (Luna Wolves in the Horus Rising series seem much more normal, as I'd imagine for most non-psychic chapters), except that, they don't all worship an Emperor (God). The occasionally stubborn or even regressive U.S. Army fits the Iron Hands and the Iron Warriors, as both utilized their armored formations frequently. But I don't think there's a close match.

Oh, if we're talking about past American societies, the Deathwing was originally based on Native American warriors

I would say the Ultramarines.
For the first hundred of year the US was a forgotten backwater in military technology. When they finally started to get involved in the world stage they had no defining tactical doctrine rather they adapted other doctrines to suit the fighting at hand. They became capable of all master of none much like the vanilla blue ultras.

By the way keep in mind this is dystopian not what America is really like but a twisted futuristic one. The Ultramarines are more like certain aspects of ancient rome. Actually as pointed out in some of the novels the Ultramarines basically just steal the traditions of other Legions.

The faith thing as well. Most Americans are religious but even the religious right acknowledges we are not a particularly religious society.

are based on the Native Americans.

I was talking about the current American state, not about Native American societies.

Stealing other people's traditions sounds very American. Not as an insult, but because we have so many different traditions. So still not inconsistent with Ultramarines.

The ultras seem like roman wannabes. I also imagine that if things took a turn for the worse in the US thing could get very very weird.

Also their such thing as English, your just a renegade province of France.

Honestly, I would say Salamanders, trying to protect the civilian populace, trying to roll into an area with the best gear, and willingness to hold a line without backing up (see Battle of the Bulge)
Now if we go on chapter, I would almost be keen on saying Minotaurs.

Well lets see...
We like to force our political views on everybody.
We are despised (if not outright hated) by most of the world. At least most of the world who we don't owe money too. And Canada. Canada loves us.
We are violent.
We like to kill things.
We like to drink. A lot. And then some more.

So it appears every Legion is based slightly on us. Ergo we are the Empire.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

No, Canada's leaders love you. Canada's people run the gamut. Anecdotally, I have heard a lot of people express their dislike and contempt of America's government.

It's pretty obvious the OP just has a general disdain for the US and its military in general.

But on topic, I agree that to just chose "a space marine chapter" is really a poor analogy to any nations military, everyone has a bit of the whole imperium in them. Though if I had to pick an army that best epitomized the US, I would probably pick the Orks, because their culture values winning so much (and it just screams redneck). And the steel legion (pointy helmets?) vs orks is kinda WWI-ish.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
