So I'm making a Traitor Guard army, and I've decided on a paint scheme (grey fatigues and dark blue armor) and I'm going with a spider motif (tanks on stalker legs, webbing painted on the armor and a red spider as the sigil).

I just need a name now. Something flashy and a little over dramatic. I thought of Arachnarok (arachnid + ragnarok) and was really proud of myself... until I was browsing spider related bits, and realized that WHFB orcs has a giant spider of the same name.

So, do I keep the name regardless? Or go with something different? Any suggestions?

I think Arachnarok is a cool name, but it doesn't sound like an army, so I think it needs a word to affix it like "Arachnarok 56th Regiment" sort of thing, but it's a pretty cool name and the scheme sounds cool too.

It's that feely feel that feels... feely.....

Arachnarok sounds more like a planet the regiment could be from

A lot of splinter legions have one off names, as if named by random IG armies they encounter. I've always been fond of long, dramatic names, like, the Surrelius 7 Armageddon Armada. Named after where they were encountered first. Something similar could be implemented here. Like, The Poisoned Legion of the Eight. Some simple nod to arachnids or spiders is probably all you need. Something simple and to the point works too, like The Tangled, Fate Weavers, The Embalmed, The Night Stalkers, or the Warp Web (admittedly, that last one is pretty cheesy). In my own practice, I've found that patience pays off. The name will come in time. The important stuff is that you have the minis and the theme. I was sold on some type of "____ Armageddon Armada" until one day, when watching old episodes of Thundercats, I came up with, "The Everliving." The name will come. So will plenty of unnecessary suggestions (including my own). Don't fret the name, concentrate on the game. And as a point the latin names of spider species are pretty awesome. You may be able to draw inspiration from them too.

You could go Black Spiders and have a awesome metal motif!

Or the scuttling horde....or even itzi Bitzi and his mecha-madmen!

Sorry, I'm not very good at being serious.

From Google.

Ungoliant - a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium (Middle-earth mythology) described as an evil spirit in the form of a spider.

Shelob - a fictional giant spider from J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium.

Aragog - giant spider from Harry Potter

In the LEGO toyline Bionicle series, the Visorak horde is a species consisting of six spider-like breeds.

The Visorak Horde sounds very Chaos-y. I approve

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I'll keep trying out different names til something clicks.
I might keep Arachnarok for the name of a super-heavy.

@Rickfactor - I might use some of those to name tanks. What did you search to find those?

Mesothelaen guard?
Mesothelae is the Latin genus name of a group of fairly primitive spiders.

I knew about the LOTR spider Shelob. The others sort of linked off of it on google.

"Legendary Spiders" would be a good search term.

Although not really great for models to use in a game, you might mind this vid interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtljheSIydY

Hmm, due to my interest in Mythology (particularly Greek), I wikied 'Spider Myths'. However, I couldn't really find to many cultural representations of spiders that could lend you a good name. That said, I did stumble upon with one possible name, but it's in no way related to Myths. So here goes:

There is spider family named 'Pholcidae'. I though the name was pretty cool sounding, so I investigated a bit more. Turns out, this particular spider is a relatively common cellar spider. However, it has a couple of interesting traits. First off, it has very long spindly legs - similar to the daddy long legs (In fact it's often named the 'daddy long-legs spider). Secondly, it's known for rapidly ensnaring it's prey in a dense, irregular web, before finishing it off with a fatal bite.

So, transferring this to a suitably Chaotic theme, you could name your Traitor Guard army as 'The Pholcidae'. An explanation for such a name would be that the army is noted for it's far reaching machinations (the long-legs) that draw their victims in with complex scheming, whittling away their strength (The entangling web), before administering the final blow with armed force (The fatal bite). It's a bit of a bare bones theory (and quite possibly a rubbish one - but hey, It was the best I could come up with), but the name, IMHO, sounds pretty awesome, and you can invent some 40K fluff around the characteristics of the spider after which they are named. Additionally, the grey fatigues, and dark blue armour could reinforce one or both of two other points: The dark grey fatigues could reinforce that they work from the shadows to confound their victims, whilst the dark blue armour could point to their affiliation with the Alpha Legion - the ultimate masters of subterfuge. Of course, this all depends on whether or not it fits with your own ideas, and whether or not you've already started construction (If not, then some Tzeentch related iconography and lot's of sniper/infiltration units may not go amiss).

Anyway, just a random idea, hope it helps

Incidentally, I only have one model partiality painted, and it happens to be a sniper.

I still need to do some highlighting and what not.
