Got my colour testers done for my Deathwing repainting project (which got moved to P&M Blogs for anyone who cares )

I didn't spend too long doing these... the actual job would be a bit neater and more carefully done.

First up, all three basecaoted in Zandri Dust, next to one of the Terminators to be done.

Then I sprayed a lighter tone at each one; from left to right they were;
Screaming Skull, folowed by Screaming Skull mixed with Skull White.
Halfords Khaki Spraypaint, Followed By Screaming Skull
Ushabti Bone, Followed by Screaming Skull

Then Applied an ink wash. Just one layer, although I think it could do with two. Liquitex Raw Umber Ink, Mixed With Liquitex Matt Medium and flow aid.

When this wash has dried off a bit, I'l try another layer and post a pic of that too Which gives me some time to decide which I like best.

Any thoughts which one is the nicest tone?
I'm feeling that I prefer not to use the spraypaint can as its not very easy to control compared to the airbrush for this job.

Edit;
Done another coat of wash on them now, its drying... so its a bit shiny in places

My favourite at the moment is the left hand side, Screaming skull/White one,with 2 layers of the wash (although I could mix it stronger to the same effect?) With some brighter edge highlights over the top, I think it will pop nicely?

I vote the one immediately next to the Terminator - IMO, it's got a higher level of contrast between the ink shade and sprayed highlight - without being too heavy on either aspect. Bah, it almost makes me want to abandon my Salamanders and do a Deathwing contingent

I'm tending to agree that its the best one of the bunch, which conveniently suits my paint stocks LOL, I've got a pot of screaming skull in reserve for some reason hehe. Being as that was in both layers of the spray for the one in question I'd be going through a fair bit of it. For the white in the mix I might go for Liquitex Titanium White Ink.... As I've got much more of that in stock and its really quite potent stuff. The test figure was Skull White - it was the first white paint I could see at the time. Which is irreplaceable now.... I guess White Scar is the new one.

Theres more than just Deathwing to come I've got a bunch of Ravenwing and Greenwing too.

Same opinion as the others. Number 1 is the best. Might just be a little dark in the photo, but I'd almost go even lighter as a base colour.

So I spent a few hours each day for the passed 3 (today included) spraying these up. Still need to apply the wash, but want to give the airbrushing time to cure a bit.

On Sunday evening, I sprayed all pieces with Zandri Dust.
On Monday I sprayed Screaming Skull in a downwards trend, not being too fussy aslong as it was generally lighter to the top.
And thisafternoon I sprayed Screaming Skull with some Liquitex Titanium White mixed in, and then Titanium White on its own.

I was being hasty, so all the highlights arent perfect,They really pop out a bit more after the wash though. I'l wait and see.
Final highlights will be an edge highlight, maybe a drybrush if im feeling lazy; not trying to win any golden demon awards here, just get them painted up quickly and reasonably (especially as the old style of layering white with a brush was taking far far far too long )

Got a handful with a wash applied now, its still wet so it shiny in places, but piccy shows how much difference it makes compared to one without any;

Those are looking good!

The washes really make them pop. Looking forward to seeing them completed!

Also that banner looks great!

Thanks for the encouragement. (theres about 25 Terminators and 2 Dreadnoughts all being done like this at once, and then a Landraider Crusader to follow)

The banner yeah it seems to have taken the airbrushing really nicely and all the little details have popped out on it.

I might colour it using only washes and glazes now, So that I can keep the nice shading on it.

Colouring will be a bit off from the usual Dark Angels scheme I think.
My Marines are all violet purple, with yellow shoulder trim, and yellow weapon casings,
My Ravenwing are the same, but with black vehicles (so any riders / pilots are still purple)
And the Deathwing before I stripped them, were bone white, yellow weapon casings, and purple cloth's.
I have been toying with the idea of going to the codex scheme though... mainly for ebay-ability... not that I plan to sell these off, but I imagine that the green DA scheme has a bit more sellability to it than my own homebrew scheme (which is kinda like Hawk Lords tbh)

So, I've been through the entire batch, washed with Liquitex Transparent Raw Umber ink, Drybrushed with Screaming Skull, and then dryrbushed again with Praxeti White (I'm not a fan of the dry paints... but I have a few that I'm trying to use up and get rid of hehe)
Then on these 5 (the command squad) I have started to base the golds out with Balthasar Gold mixed with some Ultramatt medium.
The apothecary head was simpley left out of the brown wash, and washed black instead, then drybrushed Praxeti White so far. I might brighten it up with Ceramite White later.

Ok my 2c, maybe it's the flash on the camera but i think they're too clean.

For the Lion and Terra!

Because nothing in the galaxy is black and white, Mankind views the Space Marines as a last resort. The last line. When all else fails. They take up the burden. The noble defenders of Mankind. The last hope.

With finecast you can bypass the washing stage and throw them straight into the bin.

Or cut out the middleman and just flush some money down the toilet.

Awesome detail man, I love to see other deathwings. I really liked the picture above your last one, and would've started applying paint from there instead of going over the whole model with screaming skulls to me right now they look more like white scar.. I think yours are better than mine, but if you look in this thread you can get a lot of awesome advice, and links for painting deathwing from people of this forum.

It might be the camera flash brightening it up a little, its a mobile phone camera, on a GS4 for what its worth.
I might have a play with all the settings on it, theres some (impressive for a phone, but still not quite professional)

I was going for a more white than brown look though, the wash I felt darkened them a bit too much. An oil wash wouldve been better I think, because of the being able to clean up. I might still try it at the end.
Currently trying to decide how I'm going to paint the banner while layering in some gold.

The army theyre to go with, is a home brew Dark Angel second founding. So don't necessarily need to be codex
aslong as they look pleasing by the end I'm happy.

I'm doing power armour in purple with yellow trim,
Temrinator armour in the bone white, with purple robes, feathers and tidbits.
Black bikes and landspeeders, but with purple pilots/riders.
All gun and weapon casings yellow.
Eye lenses blue.

I call them 'The Order'

So We had a spot of sunshine and Ive tried to take another pic to show the true colour. Failing though I think.

2 pics below, taking seconds apart from each other. on different settings on the phone; it has 'daylight' , 'cloudy', 'incandescent' and 'fluorescent' and auto option in the white balance. This is cloudy and day light... forgot which way around my bad.
Neither image shows the white piece of paper towel behind the mini to be actual white. but the top one is defiantly closest. (Its a sheet of bounty/plenty whatever they changed the name of the brand to for reference) (as it happens I think the phone gets a more true image in poor lighting using its flash as in prior pics taken mostly at night time)

Also done some on the bases;

These were primed in black gesso mixed with white paint, then drybrushed hexos palesun, and then praxeti white, and then washed with a heavy Liquitex Carbon Black ink wash. Which made them pretty black by the morning when it had dried so I drybrushed them again in Rakarth Flesh and then in Flayed One Flesh.

Thanks.
hehe can't say I've done anything too special on them, theyre made with sand, crushed slate (varying sizes), W&N Galeria Mineral Texture Gel, and some stuff from the bits box here and there.
Going for an urban rubble kind of setting.
Not sure if I should leave them as is, and paint the rim a nice solid colour.
Or do more detailing on them picking out the bits of metal and other debris in other colours.

I really like them like this. Probably a bit detailing on the metal pieces wouldn't hurt, but even that isn't really necessary.
What would be nice solid colour for the rim?

Hmm I dunno, Anyone got any thoughts?
My orks have solid black rims, but are not the same colour basing, so theres not necessarily any reason to make them match.
I might leave them untill I can try some possibilities out with a biker, a terminator and a power armour guy to see if it fits with all three wings of the army.

Another little update on these Deathwing, I'm still plodding along with them hehe. Havent had a huge amount of time to sit and paint this week, maybe a couple of hours in 15minute sit downs at best.

Still going on the first unit, but atleast its coming together, still quite a bit to do, but they've got some secondary colours going on, you can get an idea of wheres its going from here. The flag is eating up quite a bit of time, and still has a fair bit to be done.

For the champions Halberd, I can't decide if its going to be a metallic silvery blade, or an airbrushed nmm colour (probably yellow into black), like power weapons often are.

Another piece I'm not sure what to do with is the Thunder Hammer... what to do with the hammers head.. hmm?

Its interesting that you are using yellow instead of red or green. Will help if you play another deathwing army. What colours are you looking at doing the bases? I hope something dark and colourful.

The yellow is part of my overall DA scheme variant.

I've got purple power armour with yellow trim (a bit like hawk lords)
Black ravenwing vehicles, but witht he riders and pilots still purple.
Bone white deathwing.

All weapon casings yellow.

Essentially if you get the DA scheme and move the green around the colour wheel to purple, yellow compliments purple the same way the red complimented the green.

Edit;

heres a quick pic of whats on the shelf right now to demonstrate (although all of these are going to get repainted down the line I think - the same scheme just better painted as I've improved)

Another update on these, Really gettin there with them I think, maybe 90% done, theres a few bits that still need a colour, and some touchup and some edge highlights to do across the board really.And that flag isnt bright enough yet! Originally I was going to paint these well but fast This is week 3 or 4 ... something like that, and only the command squad have any real progress!

Never the less, almost 1 squad down! hehe.
