If bikes become troops for an army (such as white scars) replacing tactical marines do they continue to wear the X arrows on their shoulder pad or do they switch to the Tactical squad (troop) marking of a single up pointing arrow or do they switch to something else. My gut says they keep the X arrows but the X arrow is used by all the fast attack slots including speeders not just the marines.

I guess my question boils down to are the shoulder markings based on Troop, Fast, Heavy or are they based on the squad type.

Thanks

I'm not fully informed on the inner details off all the chapters specific organisation. But the biker becoming troops is an aspect of the rules and not necessary of the backstory.
There are a few ways to tackle the problem and i think all are valid as long as the specific chapter background and organisation doesn't say otherwise.

1. The bikers where always part of a bike-operating squad and bear the fast attack insignia. But for a specific operation they are fielded as the primary force in the battle and as such are counted as troops for the aspect of the gamerules itself. But they still stay part of the fast attack squad so still fast attack insignia.

2. The chapter equips even their tacticals with bikes for a specific operation. Those marines aren't suddenly shifted around in the organisation structure so they are still bearing the tactical insignia.

So just do what you like or if you follow a specific chapter try to find source material that states the exact details. And also keep in mind that not all chapters follow the same unified scheme of insignias. Some just have other icons or some even organize their squads totally different.

If you look at the bike and speeder models, the official ones are numbered either 7 or 8. These are the assault squads in a battle company. In the backstory, the assault marines of the 7th and 8th squads can use bikes and speeders. That's why those models have the fast attack symbol on them, that and because they fill a fast attack slot in the game.

The entire 6th company is made up of reserve tactical squads. The entire 6th company can also be deployed on bikes. That's in the backstory.
Similarly the entire 7th company is made up of tactical squads. They can all be deployed using land speeders.

So to answer your question, it depends on the unit they are from which is what I think you had decided yourself.
