Waylandgames? Nope.

Total Wargamer? Nope.

Triple Helix Wargames? Nope.

Element Games? Nope.

Gifts for Geeks? Nope.

Wargamestore? Nope.

Darksphere? Yep, but a mere 5% off RRP. Not worth it if you live in the UK as with GW you can get it shipped free while Darksphere doesnt offer free shipping.

Firestorm Games? Yep, and 10% off RRP. But still not worth it if you live in the UK as with GW you can get it shipped free while Firestorm Games doesnt offer free shipping.

What is it with the Whirlwind? Everyone sells Vindicators, everyone sells Predators, everyone selles Land Raiders, but why this peculiar shortage of Whirlwinds?

Darksphere whirlwind is also only available for instore collection, it wont ship. I suspect it is in a similar situation to the waveserpent where it is a GW only kind of kit, however neither are marked as direct only on the GW webstore.

Might be relevant but there is a 2 week delay on any Whirlwinds purchased from GW currently too.

Well, in the last codex they were panned as useless by most people. And that was after 6th gave them some nice boosts. They were worse back in 5th ed. They are also overshadowed by the TFC. You just don't see WWs in a lot of lists. I can understand why stores wouldn't want to stock something unpopular.

Not with the point drop they might get some use, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The HS slot for marines is pretty tightly contested, and even if the WW is worth the points, the opportunity cost of it's FOC slot is a rough price to pay.

I used them effectively against Eldar, IG, and orks in the last edition. Not the greatest, but super cheap.

Except there are a ton of better options in pretty much every HS slot in any of the marine books. 4 ML Dev squad is better. A 1 ML dev squad would be better for about the same cost and none of the fragility.

Whirlwinds make short work of anything other than MEQ that is out in the open and continue to make short work of Eldar Rangers and Guardsmen behind cover as well. I'll take a Whirlwind over a TFC any day, given that the TFC allows armor saves to be taken and is also 35 points costlier.

You can always squeeze in a Whirlwind if you have points to spare. For a TFC on the other hand, you need planning. Also, a Whirlwind can rapidly reposition itself (18" Flat Out, remember?) and two of them cost less than a 10 man tac squad.

Its just not a popular choice ..its been around for nearly 30 years as an option for marine players ..(I recall scratchbuilding turrets back in the late 80's before a model was available for the it and it was a write up in a white dwarf) ..My suggestion is just buy a couple turrets from a bits site and stick it on a spare rhino

I have one but I never use it. Either I don't have the slots or the points. Also, it could use a slight buff to range, since it's too fragile and if you hide it in a corner it can reach only half of the table. Would really want to use it more often though...

Single large blast weapons that are only effective against a small portion of units. 1/2 the time you are missing your target, then even if you are firing against an optimal target (rangers, guard behind ADL) you are only wounding on 3+. Then factor in that those units arent very expensive and you arent doing a whole lot to impact events. With the amount of ignores cover weapons, people have really stopped bringing those fragile units. Very tough unit to justify. Not a lot of people buying, so not a lot of people selling. I dont even think they have one at my lgs (and its a large store).

I like the model, but it's so hard to justify using it on the table. As some others have said, maybe if it had a bit more range.

Isn't there an Apocalypse formation with a pair of Whirlwinds and an "artillery spotter" Land Speeder? How did that work again?

Amazon has always been my go to for discount models. I did a quick search for Whirlwinds. Not a lot out there but there's currently one available for 48USD, about a 17% discount. Not sure if they'll ship internationally though, since Amazon sellers of GW stuff are usually local hobby stores here in the States.

Huh. I wonder why it's not available anymore. I bought one from Wayland in the spring or thereabouts.

While it has no bearing on the availability of the set, tabletop-wise it certainly suffers from mediocrity. For large games especially you'd rather fill the heavy slots with something else. You'd need to be able to squadron it or at least have it shoot 2+ blasts in one turn (with a moderate point cost increase to go with the latter) to make it worthwhile outside of small games or Apoc games. As it is I've never seen anyone field one, and mine is for the time being still in a box (it was waiting for the BT update which now came, but after that I haven't even had any matches, and while on Sunday I do have a tournament, again heavy slots are used by other things).

If you have the knack for building scratch builds or in this case, cardstock you will find a couple of whirlwind variations here: http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170912 You can transfer the parts to sheet styrene if you do not want to work with paper cardstock. Scroll down the list to item #30 and 31. To see what a paper model looks like, check out my threads. This site is free and the models on that thread are easily available but the ones in the free downloads have a waiting period and you have to join and make an introduction.
