Given the name, and the fact that the Dark Eldar try to capture them for their slave-arenas, I'm pretty sure they look similar to the legendary barghest, which is like a really mean dog-thing with a really bad attitude.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

All I've ever heard of them is that they're not very friendly - a 5th ed rulebook quote, from off the top of my head was: "hyper-violent"

"He was already dead when I killed him!"

There was a blurb or bit of fluff somewhere about the Imperium trying its damnedest to divert the tyranids from entering the barghesi home sector, due to what the swarm could evolve into after absorbing their genetic material.

It's in the SM codex.

The Barghesi's area of space is the Grendil stars (prieviously known as the wings of Sanguinus) and the Imperium has warning to avoid it at all costs.

Something about their biological potential makes them dangerous/a catastrophic target for the Tyranids to absorb.

I'd imagine they have very rapid evolutionary abilities. Perhaps they possess some very advanced senses, bone or muscle structure that would be devastating if the 'nids could replicate it.

Possibly maybe?

We're not given a lot of information on them, I think this thread has covered all of it, with me adding a picture from another game entirely to explain what a Barghest is, which is where GW seems to have gotten the name.

My supposition could be completely wrong, however.

I've never found much on them. Lexicanum only gives you a stub to go on.

I seem to recall there was at least one Space Marine chapter which exists solely to keep them separate from the rest of the galaxy. They've got one job, and one job only; keep them contained. I believe there are similar organizations for containing whatever's in the Ghoul Stars.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Not quite I dont think the chapter was created for that purpose they just took it upon themselves to do it because they saw it needed to be done

I did see someone make an army of them once, They used Orks as a basis (and for rules). They changed the heads to the insect-like Chaos space marine Possessed head.

In this case not wolf-like at all, probably because the person didn't know the doggy reference or that would of been too hard to make.. Until or if GW does something with them we may never know what they are actually like.

There's really nothing about them and what they look like. They were a blurb in 5th Ed, and have remained so.

The Barghest was a mythical demon or ghost dog from English cultural lore (ghest being fairly close to how ghost used to be pronounced). So it's possible that they are angry space dogs. Or maybe they're just stealthy and thus were given than moniker for the similarity to a ghost.

The Barghesi could literally be anything at this point.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?
