This weekend was the Gentlemen's
GT in Rockford, IL. I was slated as ringer for the event, and I was fortunate enough to have an odd number of folks show up so I could actually get to roll dice. Being ringer I didn't want to take a list that wasn't much fun to face (mass flying creatures, cron air, Eldar/Tau/Taudar....you know, one of those armies.) I decided to bring a variation of a list I play time to time which adds an interesting wrinkle to the game of
40k. I don't have much control over what damage I do to my opponent. Now some folks enjoy fighting this type of list, some were not so fond of it. I find it challenging to play as, and it produces some close games when played right, but I have don't have a drastic amount of control over what I damage in my opponents army.
Heres the list.
Orikan
Immotekh
Chrono-Cryptek
Cryptek w/ transmog. staff (puts you in difficult ground)
Lord w/ weave, mind-schackle, warscythe.
Lord (same)
Ctan w/ writhing worldsape, lord of fire
5 x warriors w/ ghost Ark
5 x warriors w/ ghost ark
5 x warriors
7 x Immortals (gauss)
2 x Ann. Barge
1 Doomsday Ark
That's it.
I don't have an impressive amount of shooting, pretty much 2 x Ann. barges and a doomsday Ark. The ghost arks are good vs. infantry and can strip hull points, but high Toughness or armour saves laugh at the ghost Arks. My strength is sort of melee. I have the Mind Schackle scarabs, but no guarantees they work, especially anything Ld10. Ctan can hold his own in some melees, dominate against week troops, but doesn't stand up to a drastic amount of dedicated melee units, and is susceptible to the mass S6/7 shooting. Orikan has the same statline in melee, but only during his Ctan transformation, which I also have limited control over. The games should be fun to sort of watch unfold, and I hope I can guess correctly whats going to get zapped with lightning, while planning movement, reserves, etc.
I think I will do ok at fighting Eldar as long as they don't have Wraithknights. Lots of Helldrakes could be tolerable if my ghost Arks hold. Mass flying deamons and Tyranids would be awful matchups, as well as Paladin based
GK. Marines would depend on the build. A standard Necron army (fliers/wraiths/Ann. Barges) would be probably worst possible match up. Why am I playing this crazy army again??

Hopefully Ill have some fun.....oh yeah, that's why.
Sorry no pictures folks. My dot matrix printer type descriptions will be all you have to go by on these reports......so enjoy...
Note on Missions. Primary is worth 5 pts. 2ndry mission was worth 4 pts. Tertiary was worth 3 pts. Whoever scored more, won. You could draw one of the tiers, and then no-one got the points. This way winning Primary wasn't everything, but it would help to winning your game.
Rnd 1. Primary- Emporers will (objective in each deployment zone). 2ndry Have monstrous creature/walker/ or independent character in enemy deployment zone when game ends. Terrtiary- score more Linebreaker/first blood/ slay warlord points than opponent. Deployment- Vanguard Strike (you know, the criss-crossy one.)
Opponent- Tyranids. Son of a......Well should be interesting to play, as well as challenging. As long as my opponent isn't a tool it should be a fun game. (Note, Jeff was a lot of fun to play against so it was fun ((Gasp))).
His List
Flyrant w/ H. Commander, Devourers. (gets Iron Arm and Hemorage)
Flyrant w/ lash whip/devourers (Gets Endurance, Lefe leech)
Trygon
Trygon
2 x Biovores
2 x H. Guard
Zoey (kept shooty powers)
Zoey (kept shooty powers)
10
Dev. Gaunts
15 Gaunts
Tervigon (Endurance, Warp Speed).
20 Gargoyles w/ poison
Jeez, he got Endurance and Iron Arm for all his Psychic bugs, which by the way is not good when you have to solve most of your problems with guass weapons. Also, Iron Arm on his Warlord........Aye-Aye-Aye. That's going to be a problem.
I win the roll off and have my opponent go first. I also inform him I can seize on a 4+, and w/ Orikan and the Ctan the entire board is difficult AND dangerouson turn 1. Also, anything that would have had to make a dangerous test already fails on a 1 or a 2. I had no intention of seizing, but my opponent doesn't know that.
While he is busy deploying I pace back and forth frantically slapping my self in the face, clapping my hands, chanting pump up phrases. I visualize the prize, my army and I become drift compatible, only a matter of time before we tabulate results and I am the winner and BOOM!! instant erection.
The board has a fairly large piece of
LOS terrain in the center with some scattered area terrain around the edges that has some
LOS blocking capabilities, but not too much. Now this doesn't matter much when you are fighting an army of Dinosaurs, but for those of you who want to paint a picture of the board in your mind.....you are welcome! We place our objectves in almost opposite corners.
He puts a wall of Garoyles out front strung wide. One Trygon and a Flyrant on one side of the gargoyle conga line, the other flyrant anf H. guard have the opposite flank. A zoey goes on each side as well. The Tervigon is in the center behind the flying little bugs. In the far back corner are the Biovores and 15 gaunts holding the objective. Devil gaunts outflank, trygon is deepstriking.
I deploy my Ann. barges over 30" from his H guard, but within 30" of a zoey. (Hoping for first blood....at least its something.) Ghost Arks Sit in the far corner, waiting for the inevitable monsters showing up to this party uninvited. Doomsday Ark didn't have much to do until the sun comes out. I line up a shot at the biovores/ gaunts on the objective, but that type of thinking is fairly optimistic as the flyrants will be bullying my army from turn 2 forward Im guessing. Orikan, Immotekh and the Immortals hang with the Ann. barges and the Ctan. So look out T8 or 9 flying kaiju, you got 9 robots and a star god to get through. I have 5 warriors w/ a lord attached in reserve......back up (as if Ill need it).
Turn 1. Gargoyles are apprehensive of charging forward with all the Orikan nonsense so they pack their wings away and waddle forward like akward geese, and 3 manage to kill themselves with
DT tests. Warlord goes T7 and flies up behind
LOS terrain. He perils himself (oh yeahhhhh!!) The other Flyrant endurances the H guard and jumps near his flying buddy. The Zoeys and Hguard walk forward and don't take any wounds.
My 1. OK. Cant shoot the flyrants, and in order to get the shot to kill the Zoey, I need to kind of expose my self with the Ann. barges to the flyrants. Not ideal, but Ill bring up my Deathstar (Immotekh) and my Ctan to capitalize if he tries anything funny with my barge. I start my lightning zapping using my re-roll to try to get first blood from the other Zoey. My lightning does a single wound to the Trygon. Nothing else. I fire my Ann. barge at a Zoey and kill it with a single volley. (Ka-ching!) Other barge gets me a wound on the H guard. Ok, that's all I really have.
Turn 2. Devil gaunts stay in reserve but Trygon pops up right in front of my army. Hey whats up buddy, I was hoping you were going to be a little later, but whatever man, make yourself at home right next to my army. Warlord casts Iron Arm on himself and gets T9. Oh, what was that.....oh T9, great....almost nothing in my army has a chance to damage you, ok, just checking. Oh you want to land next to the Trygon 6" in front of my army, be my guest. The other Flyrant Casts
FnP on the Warlord. The Tervigon Casts
FnP on that Flyrant and HE jumps in front of my army as well. Gargoyles decide they want to risk not jumping, but waddling again. Jeff rolls and kills 8 Gargoyles. We have a good laugh. (Secretly I was laughing because I was nervous about the monsters about to rip through my whole army.) His H. guard pen an Ann. barge, but fail to destroy it. Flyrant w/ endurance charges it and blows it sky high. (Great!) Other Flyrant fails to charge the Ghost Ark. Now if only I had 2 trees tied together that would smash together to get through his T9. Unfortunately I was all out of Ewok workers so I couldn't really capitalize much on his being on the ground. Things got better for me though as he rolls his it will not die, and gets his wound back.
Bottom 2. Ok, its going to take my whole army to deal with these 3 bugs. I need to get at his objective and the only thing I have at my disposal is 5 warriors and a lord who come out of reserves. So goys, you need to kill the Trygon, a Zoey, get to the gaunts, dodge the Biovore fire, and take that objective. Got it.....good. Ok one problem totally handled, just the three giant monsters all bufeed up and this games a wrap. I try to get the "stars to align" for Orikan (get a Ctan statline) but he says no. Ok, OK Orikan, I though I could use you against all these monsters, but you got your own agenda, so I got faith in ya buddy. I look down my bench and there is the Ctan. Ctan Im going to eed you to go Toe to Toe with one of those monsters. yes, you will probably be ripped to shreds, but don't worry, you got a bunch of gauss armed robots for back up. Ctan hits Flyrant and does a wound, but takes one as well. I try my lightning zaps and only manage to put another wound on the Trygon that started the game on the board (so he has 2 now). I fire the Doomsday Ark on the Trygon and manage a wound.....(Kaching!) I get one unit of 5 warriors and a mind schackle lord to charge the Flyrant. I then realize why the hell would I feed him that unit. Now the gamble would be to tie him up, but making him charge me does the same thing. So I sit 6" away. The rest of my entire army pours shots into the Trygon in my face and I manage wound number 2...(a double kaching!) I don't want those poison Gargoyles to come bail out that flyrant with the Ctan so I drop the cryptek blast weapon that's puts them in dangerous again.
Top 3. Gargoyles try waddling forward again and 4 more die!! Ha, see Ctan...I got your back. Warlord gets T9 again!. He shoots devourers at the warrior/lord unit and kills all but 1 warrior. Lord does not get back up. The Hguard get endurance fro the Tervigon and blow away my other Ann Barge. Hmm, not what I was hoping for. The trygon charges the Ctan. I should of at this point challenged the Flyrant so the Trygon couldn't swing on me, but I didn't think of it at the time. I get lucky though as both monsters manage only 1 wound total. I do no wounds in return though. Cmon buddy Im counting on you to just kill like 2-3 giant monsters that have the same statline.....what the heck! Warlord charges and kills lone warrior. His other Trygon moves up to bully me warriors and lord who recently arrived further down the line towards his army. H guard regen their wound. (What the heck....it will not die never does this crap for me!)
Bottom 3. Lord and warriors........If anyone has ever seen the Life Aquatic with Steve Zousou, and I that movie there is a room full of 15 or so guys firing fully automatic weapons at full tilt.......the camera pans over to Bill Murray who pulls out a pistol and starts firing while charging into the room....that's kind of how this little squad felt. They barrel into the Trygon and between Mind Schackle and the W. Scythe I put 2 more wounds on him!!. Orikan......baby.....work with me here....I gotta send my deathstar into that Trygon to bail out my Ctan......I need you. He reluctantly transforms. I send in the Deathstar and put 3 wounds on the big bug. just one more to go. Ctan and Flyrant stay locked and I take no damage, and I put 2 on the Flyrant. My lightning zaps the H guard and kills the whole unit, just like I drew it up on the chalkboard.
Top 4. Night fight ends. Gargoyles come in to bail out the Trygon locked up with the warriors/lord. Tervigon is now close to my lines and he starts spawning. he gets only 7 gaunts and is still fertile. The Warlord gets Iron arm, but just a mere T7 this turn. he barrels into the big scrum in the middle. Orikan is the closest model, so all wounds are going on him. I take just one wound. Its up to Immotekh to handle the Big Trygon, and he succeeds, putting the last wound on him and killing it. Orikan also manages to wound his warlord. Ctan and other Flyrant in the challenge do no wounds to each other. My mindschackle plus warscythe kill the other Trygon. Gargoyles kill 3 warriors and we get all locked up. At this point he has 3 more gargoyles but ......uh-ohhh.....2 warriors got back up....and they.....are ......ticked. (Sorry for the language)!
Btm 4. Ghost Ark starts coming around the central building towards the last zoey near the gargoyle fight. I start shooting devil gaunsts and kill 2. The gargoyle fight is a slap fight and one gargoyle lives and stays locked thanks to the Zoey hanging out nearby. I start firing the Doomsday Ark at the far gaunts holding the objective and manage to kill 3 or 4. Zoey keeps them safe as well. My other scoring unit needs to go for linebreaker, and hey! they might just do the heroic thing and lead the Tervigon away from my deployment zone....they might even get linebreaker. their ghost Ark starts moving with blinding speed, sliding 18" total (including flat out) along my short table edge towards the corner. Orikan goes back to being the regular joe schmoe. he manages to make his 3 phase shifter saves against the Warlord flyrant. Ctan and other flyrant do no wounds to each other. What the heck guys.
top 5. His lone gargoyle breaks and my warriors and lord are free. His zoey tries to S10 lance ny ghost Ark, but I deny the Witch......just like I drew it up on the chalkboard. The Ctan fight ends as the Ctan breaks the flyrant over his knee killing the damn thing. Orikan survives more blows from the warlord flyrant. his Tervigon has her final litter, but its a big one spawning 16 gaunts.
Btm 5. I have no units on my objective and I need this game to go to turn 6 to have a chance of winning. I have Terrtiary If I can keep Imotekh alive AND score linebreaker. If I kill this last big bug, we draw secondary. I just need to kill his big bug and have the Immortals lazily stroll over to my objective, or kill some gaunts out of
LOS. I fire the Doomsday Ark at the Biovores hoping for a scatter but no luck. The Ctan is free and now sets his sights on the last flyrant. He tells the other robots to take a break, and challenges the Warlord to combat. He takes a wound, but causes a wound. My ghost ark full of troops moves and disembarks its cargo of warriors. They start snapping and whistling to get the Tervigons attention, hopefully getting him to give chase and clear out of my deployment zone. The warriors and Lord charge the last Zoey and kill the thing. My ghost ark fires a full broadside into the devil gaunts killing all but 2. This game is looking really bad for my opponent if it goes on to 6. As it stands though he would get primary and secondary, I would only have tertiary.
We roll to see if it ends and..........."2" game over. I scream at the heavens !!!!! Very similar to John Candy being pulled on water skis by Dan Akroyd in the Great outdoors.
Actually, my opponent and I had a blast and it was a fun game win or lose. Had the gone game on I might have pulled it out, but it wasn't meant to be. I move on to my next game.
