hey guys I'm stripping some models and have left a part from the sprue of each model i am stripping in brake fluid for over 24 hours now, with no bad effects to the plastic itself.
So my question is this is the plastic used on an entire model the same or would there be any possibility of variations between the different sprues? don't want to start the whole model in the stuff before I'm 100% sure it isn't going to end up looking like some primordial slime.

the models in question are a tau hammerhead (probably one of the earliest production runs as i have had it longer than my beard)
and some space marines (fairly new)

also how long before the paint should be able to come off? the majority is off using fairy power spray and Dettol but just some stubborn bits that really don't want to budge.

It should all be the same if it came from the same kit. The only time to worry would be if they used third party sprues or kitbashed in some stuff. That being said the basic citadel plastic is the same across the line, you really would only see finecast or metal slapped on if someone did some converting. You should be fine.

Thanks bobaram, these are models i have made myself they have just been sitting in my bits box for years, however they are making an emergance seeing as i am getting an airbrush for christmas and want something to practice on before i paint properly with it.
once i get all this old paint off they will probably be stripped countless times untill im confident with my new toy!!

You should be fine.

I've not noticed any differences in GW Plastics and brake fluid over the years (their plastic has changed colour and hardness - but remained polystyrene for all that time)

You can filter the brake fluid (to get the paint scum out) with kitchen paper towel or a coffee filter, to make it slightly more effective on following batches (if you leave the paint in it, it will work slower).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

well my hammerhead is completely striped for those of you using dettol out there heres a great tip use brake fluid after to clean the gloop off works wonders, only down side is whatever i painted it with originally has dyed some of the plastic blue!! but i can live with that there is no actual paint left on it. and as an added bonus it loosened up all the polycemented joins so i could split it down into the individual parts again
