I've been reading the rulebook for some time and I've never really figured out how exactly wound allocation in close combat works. The rulebook claims that unengaged models that aren't in base contact can still have wounds allocated to them, but it doesn't really specify how far the range of the wound allocation. Since unengaged models are simply models not in base contact, wouldn't that include models that are at an infinite distance away from the attacking model as long as they are still in unit coherency?

I'm guessing how it actually works is that after allocating wounds in such a way that a pile-in move from the enemy unit cannot bring models into close combat, wounds can no longer be allocated, since I really don't think a Space Marine would be able to throw his chainsword like a boomerang and wound a guy past boltgun range.

Or maybe I'm missing some obvious part of the rulebook about all this.

That way,then left

There's no range limit on allocating Close Combat wounds. If the chain-boomerang annoys you, think of it as the fighters moving around. Or just realize realism was left in a black hole in 40K

I think the purpose of the wounds allocation continuing after models in base-to-base contact have been killed so that the attacker does not lose the kills they have scored. Otherwise if the attacker scored eight wounds and there are only three models in B2B they could only kill up to three guys. Then CC would be nerfed.

Ha like it already wasn't

Yeah it might seem odd that's how it works but if you notice you can also get attacks in from models in the back if they are within 2"of a model in base contact.

Yeah...it's kinda like that.

Chaklong I believe "engaged" is defined in the brb as models in base contact or within 2" of a model in base contact.

YMDC has plenty of room for discussion veering away from the RAW, particularly in cases like this where what is being put forward as the RAW is absurd.
