I've been reading the rulebook for some time and I've never really figured out how exactly wound allocation in close combat works. The rulebook claims that unengaged models that aren't in base contact can still have wounds allocated to them, but it doesn't really specify how far the range of the wound allocation. Since unengaged models are simply models not in base contact, wouldn't that include models that are at an infinite distance away from the attacking model as long as they are still in unit coherency?
I'm guessing how it actually works is that after allocating wounds in such a way that a pile-in move from the enemy unit cannot bring models into close combat, wounds can no longer be allocated, since I really don't think a Space Marine would be able to throw his chainsword like a boomerang and wound a guy past boltgun range.
Or maybe I'm missing some obvious part of the rulebook about all this.
