Is the Black Legion supplement worth getting? I am mainly interested in the new artefacts rules.

I don't actually have a black legion army but I am interested in what is in the book.

Is it in paper format yet?

I'm sure I read that it was out in paper in this months white dwarf, but I haven't seen it for sale so I think I'm probably wrong...

I want this as I use Night Lords as chosen - so if I take the BL supplement, I could be all Night Lords

Just had a quick flip through the new artefacts are neat as are warlord traits. Can ally with c:csm and chosen are troops by default. Votlw mandatory and if taking abaddon, one unit of termies can get +1 ws and bs for a price. No new units or characters.

Supplement is out in Australia.

There's a new Daemon Sword, slightly cheaper than the Axe of a Blind Fury. Gives a bonus to initiative. Should've always been in the codex, IMHO.

There's an awesome artefact that allows the bearer to fire an unlimited range large blast that scores D3 automatic penetrating hits to any vehicle it touches, usable once per game. Very expensive, though.

A psyker-only artefact increases the bearer's mastery by 1, though it doesn't allow him to generate another power (boo). Instead, it gives him a Nova power that increases range with more Warp Charge points.

Oh hey, an artefact that gives Eternal Warrior and Adamanitium Will. Nice. Not cheap, though.

Warlord Traits:
1. Black Crusader
2. Rerolls to Chaos Boon table for the Warlord.
3. A one-use Flamer. Woo.
4. Warlord has IWND.
5. Attacks have a chance of causing Instant Death.
6. Friendly units near the Warlord have Stubborn.

Haven't looked at the fluff or CoD or Planetstrike sections yet.

Seems interesting so far, I'm looking forward to seeing points costs. Looks reasonably inspired so far!

mmmm there's a big fluff section, a section with pictures of models, and a section with rules and missions.

The fluff is pretty much in line with what already exists. It talks a lot about Abaddon going on walkabout after the retreat to the Eye of Terror, and lays out a lot of detail about Black Crusades. It's kind of tedious reading through all of this.

The models are the models, it's like bigger pictures of everything in the Codex. There's nothing new there, really, except most things are painted black. The DV models look pretty nice.

On thing about the models: at this size, you can really see how people picked out the details. Could be useful for painters looking to do exactly what they do in the books.

The rules are laid out the same way as what's in the Eldar book. A short description about the changes to the FOC, talk about the terminators and the elites, then the warlord traits and the artefacts.

Each of the artefacts is kind of cool, but yeah, they are expensive.

- The Crucible of Lies lets you trade one point of T for rerolls for invulnerable saves of 1.

- The Spineshiver blade is a Daemon weapon that gives you +1 I.

- The Last Memory of Yuranthos gives you one more psychic level plus a Nova blast power that is kind of meh. S4 AP 5 and the range expands the more psychic points you put into it.

- The Eye of Night lets you shoot a large blast weapon, but it's heavy and it's S5 AP 4.

- The Skull of Kerngar gives you eternal warrior and adamantium will.

- The hand of darkness, well, it's a power fist that strikes at initiative and does instant death.

Past that, there are city of death strategems, planetstrike strategems, altar of war missions, and echoes of war missions. Some of them are interesting.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
There is one other section to point out, it's at the start of the "Black Crusades" section. It gives advice on how to compose your force.

So, there's 3 ways they think you should run a Black Legion army:

1) Buy a ton of CSMs. Quote: "The humble Chaos Space Marine unit is often overlooked in preference to its more specialist counterparts."

2) Buy a big unit of Chosen. Talks about how icons multiply their tabletop efficiency.

3) Buy the upgraded Terminators. Calls them undisputed terrors, heart of any attack, unleashing their fury, etc. Mentions that 2 units of 10 terminators basely costs half your points total in a 1500 point game.

Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

The #1 reason to run Black Legion is to get Chosen as troops without having to have Abbadon as your HQ. Chosen are better than standard marines but are more expensive and BL requires any unit with VotLW to take it. So you go from base 13ppm for a normal CSM Marine in the normal codex to a 20ppm Chosen. Advantages Chosen have is that they can take up to 4 special weapons in a squad, have A2 base with 2 additional CCWs (so 3 attacks normal, 4 on the charge).

The artifacts are debatable depending on your play style and luck with rolling with deamon weapons.

If you DO take BL and Abbadon, you can upgrade terminators for even more points per model too.

The new warlord traits are ok and you have to use either the BRB or BL traits...can't take Codex:CSM ones.

While I'm in the minority - I think Black Legion's ability to take Chosen is better than using just the normal CSM book. Most CSM lists that I see focuses on the HQ, cultists and then Heldrakes and the lists aren't balanced. A guy at my local FLGS used to play this and lost almost 100% of the time. Cultists would be wiped off of objectives easily. Marines (be it plague, normal, or berzerkers) wouldn't kill things, they would just end up tarpitting so objectives would become contested instead of owned. Bikers again, wouldn't actually kill things, just tie them up. He switched to BL and also started taking Fabius instead of a lord. He started running a melee-based MSU list where he would run 2 units of Chosen with 4 flamers in rhinos along with a unit of Possessed also in a Rhino. Supported with Forgefiends and a Hades Helldrake (not the baleflamer) and has has a lot more success in capturing objects and removing troops and armor alike. On larger games he'll ally in Daemons for Tzeentch Heralds to Prescience the forgefiends and grimoire the Possessed and it's even more viscious. All this because he stopped thinking about making his own 200-300pt HQ with relics and started focusing on the killing power of his troops. He looked to see how to kill things instead of just tying things up and found a more effective strategy that's working for him in our local group. He has not went against our local wave serpent spam player; however, he doesn't have too many issues with Tau, marines, or Necrons.

Black legion offers really only a few rules and a number of constraints but can work for certain people depending on their play style. For $40 (USD) and digital only, it's pretty steep. This is the same for all supplements though. If you place planetstrike and cities of death games, there are additional rules for those too.

I'd mainly take the BL supplement as an ally if anything. The VotLW tax can be a burden

Just going to copy and paste my response from last time...

The Black Legion is a good option if:

- You want to build an army based on Chosen, but don't want to use Abaddon. You don't mind that the Chosen are a little bit more expensive for the privelege.
- You want BS5/WS5 Terminators and are happy to pay out the nose for it, and don't mind if Abaddon tags along for the party.
- You don't want the Burning Brand, Black Mace or Jugger-Lord, but would instead prefer to have Eternal Warrior on your Daemon Prince, an AP3 Daemon Weapon that isn't dependant on Mark, a Psychic Nova with silly range that Blinds people, or an Orbital Strike that hits vehicles hard.
- You want to use 4 Fast Attack Slots and/or 4 Heavy Support slots from a Chaos Codex, and don't have any better plans for your Allies slot.

If none of the above apply to you, stick to the standard CSM book.

These are the only relevant differences. Unless you love Chosen, want to try the new Artefacts or want to spam out on Chaos units outside the usual FOC limitations, you are probably better sticking with the normal CSM book and saving yourself a bit of cash and points spent on VotLW.

I just want to chime in and say that the army aspects are covered pretty well above but also there are some interesting Black Legion specific missions in the book that I have found to be quite fun.

There's three BL specific missions that replace the rule book missions and a number of more fluff based scenarios (Abaddon courting favour from Doombred for instance)..
So if you're looking for more than the rules themselves then that may be a factor in deciding if you purchase this.

By the 1000 whispers of Slaanesh we call to them,

And by the mighty axe of Khorne we cut open the world for them!
