My wife's 1500 Dark Elves army, to be played against my WoC list. Trying to make the most of the models we already own, so beyond the witches and the cauldron it isn't really super optimized.

Dreadlord, Pegasus, Pair of Handbows, Heavy Armor, Cloak, Shield, Ogre Blade, Black Amulet 317

Death Hag, Witchbrew, BSB, Cauldron 330

30 Witch Elves, Full Command 360
5 Dark Riders, Shields, Crossbows 100
1 Hydra 160

One of the 2 following options:
14 Black Guard, Mus, Champ 230

Or

5 Cold One Knights, Full Command 225
Gleaming Pennant for the Witches 5

Either way, 1497 points

Cauldron BsB is a bad idea just asking for a cannonball to the face. Remember on there she can even be targeted separately by magic missiles and shooting attacks, with two T3 wounds and nothing but a 5+ ward she'll die turn 1 pretty much every game to a decent player with any sort of magical offence or shooting.

No magic is an "interesting" idea to say the least with Dark Elves.

Solo Monsters aren't a great idea whilst neither of your 2 special units has enough bodies to be worth it. Blackguard need Power of Darkness or Wyssans and a razor standard to be worth it.

So solve both the above problems and drop the Hydra to boost the COKs (still don't get enough for me but 10 at this point level is pretty good) or drop the special unit for another Hydra. Hydras need breath weapons if at all possible.

i have play tested the new hydra with is rules and its just weak now. I see no point in taking the hydra anymore. can find some other uses for the points

I disagree it's not the powerhouse of the last book but it is Special now and has the Kharibdyss for support. Monsters need to be used in Multiples. Charging a 160 point monster into a 250+ point unit and being shocked when it dies is not the way to use them. Multiple fear tests to dovetail with Shroud of Despair however is a fantastic use of them. Flanking with 3+ Monsters running up a flank likewise can be very powerful.

The Hydra is good just has to be used differently to the last book.

Well, what models do you have? I can make better suggestions knowing that. As FlingItNow says, no Magic is a generally bad idea with DE, since they're so good at it. But if you don't have a sorceress... I don't want to bother suggesting things you won't be able to implement.

As for the Cauldron though, it's still a good purchase, especially on witches. Re-rolls to wound, an extra attack and a 5++ is great, well worth it. The Cauldron still has a 4++ against cannon fire and WoC only have the Hellcannon anyway.

The reason to take them is:
1) Reaper makes an awesome hydra in the Bones line, for $20.
2) As Specials, you can take 3.
3) Three of the new hydra is about as good as Two of the old hydra. Good thing you can take 3.
