Are there any examples of SM chapters turning rogue/renegade without turning Chaos? It seems that renegade/traitor/chaos space marine is now just one big synonym. If so, please go into a little detail. I'm thinking of making a SM chapter (just for fun) where some of its members were infected with a horrible mutating disease from nurgle but hid it from the rest of their chapter. it continued to worsen but they would sever said infected part of body and replace with mechanized parts. It continued to worsen to the point where during a battle, very-inconvenient-warp activity accelerated their mutation and became known to the rest of the chapter how serious their plague was. So the rest of their chapter chose to give them a mercy killing so to speak. The infected marines fled and so now despise Chaos (Nurgle most of all) for corrupting them and also hating their so called "brothers who chose to gun us down without a moments hesitation." They do not swear loyalty to Chaos and while they don't hate the Imperium so to speak, they wish to see the death of their "brethren." Sound cool?

Maybe Chaos Daemons are so angry all the time because despite their near infinite intelligence they can't seem to forge anything more complex than a sword, an axe, or a staff

Relictors are possibly similar to the Soul Drinkers, though there are only a hundred or so left, and they are hiding out from the Inquisition in the Eye of Terror.

If you're looking for current examples of chapters operating as renegades I'm unable to provide any that haven't been stated. However, if you're looking for renegades that fought the Imperium and didn't turn to Chaos, you should look at the Badab war materials. Other than the main instigator Astral Claws who became the Red Corsairs and did fall to Chaos, none of the other chapters involved had any taint of Chaos. They did rejoin the Imperium after the conflict though, so I'm not sure it's exactly the kind of renegade you're looking for.

Renegades/traitors are usually grouped together because there is only so long you can just remain renegade before either falling to chaos or getting wiped out trying to do what's right.

I mean resources wise, if you're renegade you're not getting much unless you loot and steal. Resorting to chaos just makes it so much easier.

Of course they could remain renegade but its a hard life! Which makes them sound even cooler

The Blood Knights are renegade they were deemed traitors by the Inquisition because they did not like how they fight. The Blood Knights still worship the Emperor and consider them selves loyal, they even returned to aid the Blood Angles when the nids attacked.

What he said! Although the tiny mention the Relictors got in the last SM codex might have retconned that a touch, dexcribing them as being under suspicion and on the watch-list. Pre-Inquisition whupping, anyway.

some fluff has the Night Lords not worshiping chaos. They would then be a renegade legion.

There are plenty of renegade chapters, but there are just no rules that really reflect them very well. I go with C:SM(although my chapter does worship Chaos as a universal truth)

keep in mind ALL SM chapters are pretty much semi self sustaining and owe very little allegiance to the imperium's government when ya think of itm the ties are pretty tenious. I suspect a lot of chapters pretty much do whatever the heck they want. the reason we hear of renegade chapters being mostly cause is because to be declared renegade they [retty much have to act eaither blatently against the Imperium or do obvious chaosy stuff

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
