Alright dakka, bear with me here. I'm a completely new player and I was just gifted some assorted IG infantry, and I have no idea how to paint them.

What colors for a generic imperial guard color scheme? Tips? How much am I looking at, assuming I go to a Games Workshop store to get it?

I guess it depends on which IG models you got. There's the bare armed jungle fighters (catachans), the shoulder armor +helmet Starship Troopers looking guys (Cadians), guys with big coats, guys with gas masks.... They all have different "generic" color schemes. One thing to keep in mind always is that these are your models, so whatever you WANT to paint them like is fine. If you want to stick with the color scheme GW did, then we need to know which variant of IG you're working with.

In terms of paint, there's lots of other miniature quality paints available. If you want to stick with GW(citadel) paint, then you can find 10-20% off the paint at various online places.

The IG Codex has lots loads of picture options. I had some Cadian Infantry with a red cammo pattern uniform, the carapace armor was a dark red. They looked good. Perhaps a world they campaigned on had red colored deserts. Just trying to throw out some ideas.
