Under a pile of rubble

Some of you know I have been working on a Ork campeign for Only War (W40k RPG) here is what I have come up with thus far to make guardsmen to ork boyz

ORKY CHARACTERISTICS!

Weapon Skill 2D10 + 22
Ballistic Skill 2D10 + 15
Strength 2D10 +23
Toughness 2D10 +25
Agility 2D10 + 20
Intelligence 2D10 +15
Perception 2D10 + 20
Willpower 2D10 +20
Fellowship 2D10 + 20

+2 to starting wounds

Specialty/ Classes are more or less the same, just with orky names, a few positions I made up except a few I made up, I'll list the names of the ones I made up

Ministorum Priest = Priest of Mork
Operator = DRIVA'
Ratling = Gretchen
Ogryn = Converted Orgyn or Mutated squib (can't decide which)

All companions will be Gretchen, you must roll a fellowship test to get them to do anything "scary" like go into battle, if you fail the companion is incapacitated for 1 turn

Let me know what you think

You know the rogue trader books have the method for creating ork player characters right? All it takes then is adjusting the imperial stuffs in only war for orky things, and it's fine.

Rogue Trader and Only War are 2 completely different gaming systems. So I am doing it completely on my own. The gear for orks is all looted anyways so I am using "Unreliable" traits for some weapons and taking away "reliable" traits from others. Only War is easy to convert and change to suit any race, it's how they made it. If I was able to use the RT ork conversion Only War would be a supplement, not a different game, like it is. I never said it was hard just that I have been working on it (on and off) Basically I used the general characteristics for the usual 2D10 but changed the bonus +20 normally permitted to make PCs Orks, such as Int is lower while Toughness is higher, making the changes enough to be orky and at the same time not OP. Sorry to say but any RT source books are useless and not exactly on topic to this

The way characters are made is basically the same, you can see what they did for stat bonuses for orks to make sure yours are correct. Things like starting wounds, +25 for str and toughness (I think)

RT uses set characteristics that players add 100pts to the 9 characteristics not more than 20pts per characteristic depending on what world they are from and ect ect. OW Says you take 2 D10s you roll them than add 20 to the number then that is your characteristic. Already this is different they become even more different as I go on but you get the idea. Just because they have the same 9 characteristics doesn't mean the same conversion process would work for both games, especialy once you get into regiment characteristics or in this case Warband characteristics. Which replaced the whole origin world. You cannot transplant one thing into a different game system without converting what you are trying to transplant. In which case why even do it this way and why not just use common sense and do it on your own like I did which takes less work. Once again RT is OT here

I swear, I'm trying to help and save time, and you don't even read?

Page 60 of the rogue trader book, into the storm, reference material is there.

It contains rules (guidelines) for clans and classes, as well as talents, traits and skills all orks have.

Also within are ork characteristic modifiers and a bunch of other information to help plan out the aptitudes. Read it.

OP 's got a point. The various core books in FFG's 40k RPG product line are different games, that have (a) evolved over a span of years and (b) attempt to focus on different narrative subjects, all of which leads to them featuring different rules or even different profiles for the same gun or creature. That is exactly why people generally recommend against just porting stuff from one game into another.

Only War is fine for OP's plan, because that game's rules focus on a warzone and military campaigns as opposed to experienced space opera adventurers and their exploits in deep space. My (arguably biased) opinion is also that Only War's Aptitude system makes houseruling this sort of stuff very easy and fun, as it practically invites you to modify the stuff it presents.

Now, personally I wouldn't attempt to convert the different classes on a 1:1 basis and instead just create a general "Ork" class that simply features tons of options for customisation towards a specialty (with Gretchin as Comrades), but such things are a simple matter of personal preferences.

Anyways, good luck, OP! Waaagh!

UPDATE

Warband Wutwut characteristics

  • Deathworld 3pts ]

  • Warboss: Billious 2pts

  • Light infantry 2pts

  • Hardened fighters 2pts

  • Scavangers 3pts

  • Total: 12pts (Standard)

So are you saying they should start off default then work toward a specialty? Or Pick and choose skills at the get-go (with-in reason)?

Huh. I could see either option working out. It's kind of like the same path of development for the characters, just with the 2nd option being a bit more "advanced" I guess?

It probably depends on how much variety you want there to be between the characters, though I would try to achieve variety less by classes, but more by personality quirks and equipment.

Also, I feel like an Orky game should feature a lot of black humour a la Deff Skwadron etc. Like, for example when you're throwing a Stikk Bomb or some other type of grenade, and the player does a bad roll, the GM should not describe it as if the grenade would come bouncing back (as per the standard rules) but rather that their Gretchin Comrade would dash forward and try to fetch the grenade to bring it back to their Ork.

Hahahaha Perfect Gretchen idea! The Gretchen comrades just keep getting more and more of a hassle and equally hilarious! Having to "motivate" them to do things in "scary" situations ( I leave the motivating up to each PC to ensure an entertaining show), a bad roll throwing a grenade makes them want to play fetch. Orks are easy, they use everything human made just "looted" and modified to suit their purposes but I am also doing an eldar conversion, which means every single peice of wargear is house made, a lot more work since eldar aren't in any OW books I have including the "enemies of the imperium" book. I don't do this because I really want to play orks or eldar, I do this to amuse myself while putting together a gaming group (which I haven't had much success lately) by the time I actually get a group together I will probably have every race down except tryanids and necron since they don't exactly have free will imo, might even do a SM conversion because I kinda hate Deathwatch its too easy since PCs start kinda OP from the get-go. I will be posting the Eldar one as soon as it's finished (already did the stats, weapons, armor, craftworld uthwe stats. Fun fun
