Its dreadful. It used to be called The War Z in a fairly blatant attempt to leap on the Day Z bandwagon and there is a whole raft of things wrong with it. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/12/20/wot-i-like-best-about-the-war-z/.
If this sort of game interests you then I suggest you wait a few months for the Day Z standalone (or buy ARMA 2 and play the Day Z mod now).

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Is Day Z still going? Stopped playing after they did away with the 'bandit' costumes, it utterly trashed the dynamic of player interactions. Although, I'm sure it moved on a bit as that was some time ago!

That was a very long time ago
I didn't mind the removal of the bandit skin as it didn't really work that well, its a shame that nothing replaced it though as DayZ, being an online FPS, attracted far too many people who treated it like just another death match.
Day Z is still going, but not to the same degree that it was last spring. I played it again a couple of months ago and it seems largely the same as it was but its one of those games that people play obsessively for a while and then completely lose interest in it.
I expect that the same thing will happen with the stand alone so I can confidently expect to spend another couple of months hiding in bushes, terrified of other players

I never figured out why people liked Day Z, it was mostly a more, slower deathmatch.

Thats what it became but in the early days a lot more people were co-operative,but there was still a strong element of banditry, and it was a genuinely new gaming experience. Over time it did become little more than a deathmatch with almost everyone having a shoot on sight policy, which I suppose was inevitable given that its an online game. The first couple of months were probably the best time to play it, even if it was incredible buggy (I was killed by going prone on a rock for instance) as it allowed the game to play to its strengths.
Some of the best gaming experiences that I have ever had were in this game, running into another group of survivors while looting Stary and spending the next hour in a game of cat and mouse with sniper rifles, rushing to a friends aid from several ingame kms away while he was pinned down by bandits or even the simple realisation that there is another player in the same area as you which brings on a flight or fight response unlike anything I have seen in another game (with the possible exception of EvE). I think that the Stary gunfight that I mentioned ws probably my most memorable gaming experience, even though we lost in the end and most of it was spent slowly crawling through a zombie infested village.
