I'm thinking of drybrushing it but I don't know if that's really the best way to make a good transition. Any ideas?

Multiple thin coats of black. Seems silly but that's how I've always done it make sure it's thinned down enough so it dosnt dry blotchy

The very best way would be wet blending. If you're not up for that, than as brother marcus suggested, layering with paint thinned to the consistency of a glaze. Dry brushing will work, but practice like you're trying to get to Carnegie Hall on bitz before you commit to trying it on a model.

In my limited abilities, I tend to go from black, then layer in thin grey mixed with black, pulling out the black, then adding white with each layer until you build up to white. It takes forever and drives me nuts so I hardly do it. As others have said, wet blending can do wonders, but I have yet to master it.

Start with the white (a light grey) and blend back. Always layer with the paint that has better coverage, thinned appropriately.

If you need to control the transition (for example over a large area) paint bands of mid colours (so you have a stepped gradient) where you need them, and use those as targets for your blends.
