I just heard that the torsos of the new and the old tactical squads are different (they aren't interchangeable). If I'm buying bits, is there any way to tell whether or not the torso front or back comes from a newer or older tactical squad box? Can anybody tell if this lot is from an older or newer box?

Are the legs different?

that lot is new.
The legs are mixed new and old sculpts.
as any marine box all bits are interchangeable

k so I just found this picture, and it seems like the old tac squad torso backs don't have the three circles on it. Is this true?

For one, the name of the listing is "40K Space Marines New Tactical Torso Bits" (emphasis mine) and secondly, just look at pictures of the sprue at GW's website. They are, in fact, the new torso bits and they are compatible with the older tactical kit.

Yes, the legs are different as in they offer more armor marks than the previous kit, but they can be used with the old torso bits just fine.

Thanks! I guess I'm asking because I was told on another thread that the torso backs in new tactical squad boxes aren't compatible with the black templar upgrade kits, so I need to find backs from the old tacticals. To me it looks like the old tactical backs don't have the three circles that the new tactical backs do. Is this true?

lol I didn't realize that "new" referred to the new sprues, I just thought it might be ebay fluff.... or new as opposed to used... I guess that makes no sense. I see models listed as "mint" even though models aren't made in mints... so I guess I tend to overlook fluffy sales words in the titles lol. Thanks though!

The backs and fronts are not interchangeable between new and old torsos. GW reversed the side that has plugs and the side that has sockets when they made the new ones. But once you glue two matching halves together, the resulting torso will be interchangeable with all space marine legs, arms, heads, and backpacks.

If you have unmatching torso fronts and torso backs you can simply cut or file off the pegs and glue the halves together, but you'll have to align the pieces yourself instead of letting the plugs do it.

That has been my experience. I took the caped back from the commander kit and used it with one of the new sternguard fronts to make an honor guard chapter champion. Besides the lack of pegs for alignment, everything fit. There was no size/scale change, just the I/O nature on the pegs.

The boltguns and arms are slighty different now as well - the gun is attached to the hand already, requiring the hand to be glued at the wrist.

the hand-attached-to-gun part is worth pointing out. if you want to use a weapon from a third party or an older kit, you're going to have to come up with an arm that's got a hand on it already (e.g., an arm from an older tac marine). I ran into this last night and was a bit surprised. luckily, I had some spare arms in the bitz box.
