I have always pronounced "Tyranids" like "Tear-Ah-Nids" (Tear as in crying) as does everyone I have known. But recently I was told the official GW pronunciation is "Tie-Ran-Ids." Is that true?

Bonus question: How do you pronounce "Ymargle"?

Also, OP, "Tear-Ah-Nids" can be pronounced two different ways....

But it's still "Tie" for me.

Exactly. They come from Tyran (Tie-ran in my mind) so I call them Tie-ra-nids.

Ymargle = Yi-margle, although no one in my group uses them so I've probably had to say the word about 4 times ever.

Again, can be pronounced two different ways. And 'most people' is a bit of an assumption.

tyr is preonounced tear,

ty is pronounced ti

in words where TY is joined to R with a syllable(s) afterwards

ie tyranids, tyranny, ect

can all be properly "pronounced" as tie-ranny- or tear-anny

its literally a toe mae toe vs ta mah toe thing, as peoples brains will pick up on what they think is proper.

technically its more correct to do the full sound, so tear-anny, tear-anids, ect... and sometimes context matters,

IE "that man is an absolute TIE-rant" makes more sense then "that man is and absolute tear-ant"

where as "do not suffer the tear-anny of evil men" makes more sense "do not suffer the TIE-ranny of evil men"

just as aluminium isnt pronounced al-u-min-um, it is actually pronounced as allu-min-ee-um... I think the yanks even went so far as to drop the "i" from their spelling, just as they drop the U from colour and armour often.

but since english has different rules in different countries, different people wll pick up on the syllables differently

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The aluminium/aluminum debate is much more complex than that. The first word used for it was Alumium. Then, of course, it was later discovered but not isolated by a British guy. He called it Aluminum. When he submitted it for peer review, everyone thought that name was stupid and said "It should be called Aluminium" to go along with Sodium, Strontium and others like it.

And can we please, please stop saying that we pronounce it "tear"? This word has two pronunciations.
