I see 20 devgounts in dropspore in many lists, but on paper they look not that awesome vs meq:
60shots > 30hits > 15 wounds > 5unsaved wounds
They are then at mercy of whatever unit bothers to shoot and rout them or assault them and slaughter them to bits.
So what makes them so popular?

They are fearless when within 12" of a synapse creature so morale isn't an issue (assuming you are podding them along sidesome trygon primes and/or zoanthropes)
Why do people take them? Probably becuase it's fun to throw loads of dice, it's similar to why people take dakkafexes.
Also note that the -1 Ld and pinning is only on the dakkafex/flyrant ranged weapon (twin linked devourers with brain leech worms) - the brain leech worms are the bit that gives the -1 Ld

Also, with a Flyrant with Old Adversary or the Swarmlord being able to give out Preferred Enemy to a unit at distance, the 20 dev-gants end up being more killy than the normal math.
30 Dev-gants outflanking (via hive commander upgrade on one's Tyrant) is even more disgusting, and really doesn't even need the PE to get the job done. The only issue is rolling all the dice...

They are fun - exactly as people say, because you get to roll lots of dice.
We reworked our list, originally with devilgants, often benefiting from PE on the flyrant, to include two dakkafexes - consensus of our victims is that the dakkafexes are far scarier, altho of course more expensive. But I'd rather one one devilgant pod than a single dakkafex in a pod - if they drop at the same time as the DoM, they give the enemy a lot to deal with.

20 Devgaunts with Old Adversary Flyrant nearby vs MEQ:
60 shots > 45 hits > 28.125 wounds > 9.375 failed saves
Add in the spore's shooting and that's a full strength unit obliterated, and now you have a big scoring unit with a lot of firepower on your opponent's side of the field that they have to deal with.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in space and flung him into the Warp, where my evil is law! Now the fool seeks to return to real-space, and undo the evil that is Chaos!" |

Same reason people let their full stregth hormagaunt broods get out of synapse and charge: buckets of dice are fun.
With the Devgaunts you also get a bit of wiggle room with the Pod DS site, due to the range of the Devourer.
And it's not like they're the only thing getting droppd in. They're supposed to be the least scary target in a massive DS wave including Zoanthropes, Trygons and Raveners (okay, maybe not Raveners).

You're both wrong actually. All Devourers give -1LD for Morale checks, none of them are Pinning. Page 81 C:Tyrandis.

I played a 'Nid list that had a squad of devilgaunts podding in, ymgarls popping out, a tervigon outflanking, and the doom podding in.
All that i had to deal with while Tyrants and Tervigons were closing and putting a bunch of S6 into my army.
It's about providing threats, and the devilgaunts are a threat, but not half as much as the other stuff that turns up at the same time.
