Afternoon all,
I was wondering how many 3mmx2mm magents (or for all you imperials 1/8 x 5/64) would be sufficient to hold a weapon sponson
I wanted to be able to discuise mine into the surround and not have an ugly bit of spru fixed in place
I will try and upload a picture with possible locations of magnets if that would help?

Thank you
Tom

The only tutorials i have found have been gluing bits of sprue in the doorwar, im hopeing to do a display model where techmarines are takeong off all the doors and replacing weapons i didnt know if 2,3 or 4 would be more than enough

Thank you for your replies

It's difficult to make it look 'real'. I used 5 3mmx2mm per sponson, magnetising at the recess panel (the bit you'd want to actually keep in place, so you'll need multiples of those).

Wow 5 magnets? I was worried about the recess in the sponson mounting breaking through the other side.
Did you green stuff the magnets in from the other side?

Thanks this is really helpful Winterdyne

Nah, they're just epoxied into place. I would recommend putting a thin film of epoxy over them as well.
You do need to be careful drilling the recesses for them - I ground down a drill bit to have a shallower cutting edge on it for the purposes of boring out magnet holes. You need a small pilot hole to do that though.

Just checked; I think these were 1mm magnets, probably explains why there are 5 of them. :-)

You mentioning the thickness on the sponson's what reminded me - effectively you drill a deeper hole than the magnet, a thin magnet is what you need there. I just checked and I do have a stack of 3x1's which is most likely what I used there for that very reason.

Okay il get some on order thank you for your help.
How many magnets did you use on normal doors? I imagine too many and you would never get the thing off.

Thank you

On the normal doors I hinged them and used one coupled with a piece of paperclip embedded in the door to act as a catch.

If you don't care about the inside of the landraider, you can glue a cross brace across the door, glue a magnet on that and glue a coin on the back of the door/sponson. I did that and it holds well enough, but can be easily removed to swap things out.

I will go home and take pictures if you would like.

OP states no cross-brace if possible.

I have drilled and placed magnets in the top two and centre bottom in one of the door ways, now i need superglue to glue the magnet into the door. Let me have a look at how to upload pics on here, taken one and will post it up asap

Thanks

I've magnetised my LR sponsons with only 1 2mmx1mm magnet each. The grip is ok. The holds is fine when being pushed around on the TT, but if you turn it on it's side, it wont hold it's own weight.

In my sig, is a link to my blog. Page 2 or 3 is the LR magnetising part, if you wanted to see where i put the magnets.
