Hey all, this may already be a widely known theory that I am not fimiliar with. But is the White Scar chapter based of of the Mongol empire?

The Mongol's were known for being exceptionally talented horsemen who won most of their battles by hitting the enemy on horseback and than "retreating" backwards this was actually just a way to move backwards and hit them with arrows from horseback whilst being out of enemy range.
This seems exactly like a certain "hit and run" rule that alot of white scar units have if I'm not mistaken.
Thy are also a widely bike based army which is essentially the space Marine version of a horse..

Finally the Khan was the head of military for the Mongols. Genghis Khan, Khubilai Khan, etc.

And the White scars... Well jaghati Khan and Kor'sorro Khan...

Yep it is widely known by people who like the setting.

Now you should try to find out the source of inspiration for the rest of the Legions.

Try. Really, it is fun trying to spot all the references. And there are many.

I could give you some answers, but it is just too much. The setting was born big and has kept growing for 30 years.

Lexicanum is a good place to begin. But also all background sections of all w40k forums.

Enjoy it.

The Dark Angels Primarch is going to blow his mind.

What is best in life?
To wound enemy units, see them driven from the table, and hear the lamentations of their player.

Because of his dark, dark secret? Perhaps

More because of the dark, dark origins of his name. Though I imagine the OP has noticed that already.

The mongols did conquer China, you know.

Well, parts of it, anyway. What do you think that great stonking wall was about? "Now stay out!"

The Mongols had controlled parts of china for decades, but after the Khan took it he conquered China proper along with Mongolia and pretty much the whole known world.

The Mongols ruled China for close to 100 years in the traditional Chinese Emperor-type way. This was called the Yuan Dynasty

They are actually Mongorians.

Common mistake. The bikes are a distraction, their real specialty is siege warfare to make the Iron Warriors green with envy.
