Let me start off by stating that I am fairly new to the 40k universe, I know alot but far from everything.
So I got a friend to start playing and he chose Necrons, now I like to atleast be able to explain why the battle I'm having is taking place but Im drawing a blank on this. I know Tyranid invade worlds to strip them of biomass, but as far as I was aware Necrons are basically just souls in robots. Anyone have any ideas on why these 2 would clash other than just because?

Because the Tomb World is rich in biomass. The Necron presence is incidental... but it is a world of their Dynasty, and they certainly aren't going to sacrifice it to these insects.

Not all Tomb Worlds are deserts. Biomass is more than the population of the planet. The planet's soil, atmosphere, flora and fauna are all part of its biomass.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Also, nids are life so the necrons would want to get rid of them.

They would rarely fight each other there is not much living on a planet wit a fully awake tomb world and necrons are a more defensive race they have no interest in conquering new planets just taking what was theres. There is also a piece of fluff that says tyranids avoid tomb worlds because they will starve due to lack of food.
But how you can say they are fighting is simple a planet with a not fully awake tomb world with people and flaura and fauna on it allowing there to be a sizable tyranid force by the time the tomb world fully awakes.
Get a gaurd player and you have the background for an escalation league or even two medium size tyranid and necron forces with a equal gaurd army inbetween these two fun last stand type battle.

Dormant Tomb is over grown with jungle.

Tyranids invade, strip biomass from world.

Sometime later, Necrons emerge from Tomb World to find it bare.

Necron in charge is in disbelief, screams "My Azaleas!"; swears revenge.

on the forum. Obviously

Tyranids are after minerals too, you know. Even the human body needs Iron and Calcium. Oh, and Sulfur. Sweet, stinky, sulfur.

Also lets not forget that the Nids are the only faction that can be considered an existential threat to the Necrons.
