What are the most effective and competitive necron units?

Warriors, and more Warriors.

I'm not a necron player, but I know my brother likes to use the annihilation barge, and usually runs a mix of warriors and immortals. wraiths are nasty as well...

Necrons... pretty much anything in that codex is viable as long as you stay away from the Elites section.

Gamebreakers of note include: Warriors in Ghost Arks, Deathmarks with DespairTeks, Annihilation Barges, Wraiths with Destroyer Lords and Whip Coils.

I've only played a few games with Wraiths and they have been great!

But I've found canoptek scarabs to be my hands down most effective pt for pt unit.

I'm only putting scarabs over the wraiths because I've only recently added my wraiths and haven't had a long enough time to burn them in to really understand them compared to the rest of the unit types I have.

Annihilation Barges, Deathmarks, Overlords with Res Orb/Sempiternal/MSS/Warscythe, Wraithwings, CROISSANT SPAM LISTS (flyer lists ha ha).

That last one will make people hate you.
