I'm looking for a good place to get magnets. I have 4 riptides, 2 sunsharks, 2 commanders and about 25 crisis suits I need to magnetize but can't find any locally so if of you know a site and could possibly give me some sizes recommended for each since I have nothing to reference I'd greatly appreciate it

thanks in advance

eBay is your best bet. I'm quite a novice at magnetising, however, so I'd think it best to wait for a better authority on the sizes. I've just ordered my first set off eBay, so if you're still looking when they arrive, I'll tell you how well they fit my models.

Take some of your own measurements to see which diameters you'll need. 2mm x 1mm are about the smallest i've seen. I use 3x1 mm the most on marines and marine vehicles. You probably won't want anything thicker than 2mm no matter the diameter. 2x1mm and 3x1mm are relatively easy to embed right in the plastic, thicker would just be too hard to embed I think.

ebay, make sure you enable searching worldwide, and sort by price + postage. Could just be for Australia, but that gives us awesome options from China that easily beat domestic options.

I did a bit of research into this.
Below is details of a highly recommended supplier & details of best magnets to get, inc UK prices.

www.first4magnets.com

Neodymium magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets available.

Most regularly used for miniatures.
The smaller disc shaped magnets...
1mm Diameter x 1mm deep,
2x1mm,
3x2mm.

1mm dia x 1mm thick N42 Neodymium Magnet - 0.025kg Pull
£6.30 for 100

2mm dia x 1mm thick N42 Neodymium Magnet - 0.13kg Pull
£4.00 for 50

3mm dia x 2mm thick N42 Neodymium Magnet - 0.25kg Pull
£5.50 for 50.

4mm dia x 1.5mm thick N42 Neodymium Magnet - 0.36kg Pull
£4.20 for 20

Hope this helps.

In north america I use k&j magnetics.
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/

They have great customer service and a lot of good information on what EXACTLY you are getting (as opposed to a few of the ebay dealers).

I magnetize a LOT of minis...here is what I use for tau:

1/8" x 1/16" disc N52 Disc Magnets
(the n52 is stronger, and gives an excellent hold).
* crisis suit weapons and war gear
* broadside wargear and seekers
* secondary weapon systems on riptides and vehicles

1/4" x 1/16" disc N42
* hammerhead main weapons
* riptide main weapon
* bases of hammerheads on my custom made flight stands
* anything else you need a big magnet for.

Sometimes, I also like to use rectangular magnets,as they look cool as panels and help with parts that might otherwise "spin" (like the shoulder mounted rail guns on the older broadsides, or maybe mounting seekers in the under carriage of a fish).
1/4"x1/8"x 1/32" Rectangle N42
* panels on crisis suit shoulders.
* mounting point for secondary weapons on broadsides.
* panels on hull of fish/HH for secondary systems
* mounting points for secondary systems on riptides.

there are TON of videos on magnetizing on youtube, but I want to share a few things I have learned.

* always check your polarity
* superglue accelerator is very useful
* get a pair of brass (or non magnetic) tweezers - they are very handy
* check your polarity again!
* keep a "reference" weapon/wargear item out for polarity checking and magnetize ALL gear the same way.
* magnets love sticking to your skin when you have glue on them.

I polarize ALL my wargear and weapons the same. That way a smart missile from my broadside works on my riptide and works on my sunshark. I never have to worry "does this seeker go on my barracuda or my skyray?". They all work.

If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask!

Best of luck and have fun!

I use K&J as well.

Dave gives good advise. My workhorse magnets are the 1/8" discs. I use a 1/8" drill bit that fits them exactly.

Also, if I can add some additional tips:
- Get multiple pin vises. It savings have to swap out drill bits all the time.
- Use a sharp scribe to make a pilot hole and then use increasing large drill bits to make your hole.
- A little bit of blue tak is great tool to find out where the opposing magnet needs to be positioned.
- Lastly, I took a stack (10 or so) of 1/8" magnets and wrapped them with hobby tape. That form the handle for handling magnets. I can use it to check polarity and then, as long as the handle is at the back, all the polarities are correct.
