So, this just got posted to White Dwarf Daily: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/wnt/blog.jsp
Do I smell preparations for a new IG Codex + Models? Something else?
Anyone know with certainty what this is?

There's been some rumors about an expansion allowing you to take a super-heavy in standard sized games. Kind of like the spearhead rules in 5th edition I guess.
Given that this shows a bunch of guardsmen staring down a khorne-mower, along with mention of baneblades and aquila strongpoints below the video, that seems a good possibility.

Rumored "use Apocalypse stuff in normal games" expansion. IOW, an "expansion" that is only useful for toilet paper because nobody will ever use it.

Sadly what Peregrine says is very true in my region. Hardly anyone owns a superheavy and noone would be willing to play them in a normal game (here a normal game is considered to be in a range of 1500-2000).
We also have a bunch of tourney players that will never include FW stuff in their games or any new / experimental rules aside from the holy BRB and FAQ + some Polish 40k community tourney league erratas. I am positive that this expansion will have totally no reception here.

Really? We had a lot of fun with the various 5th edition supplements.
Just some breath of fresh air and a reason to use your superheavies in normal games. We already did that in some narrative games and its nice to have some official rules.
Of course you are right that not everyone is into this kind of play but saying nobody will ever use it is wrong.

Oooh, nice. This Escalation thing will be coming sooner than I thought. Interested to see exactly what it'll look like. This could actually be referring to two different expansions, if the rumours are anything to go by. The super-heavies would tie into the Escalation thing, while the Aquila Storngpoint could tie into the Stronghold Assault thing that's been mentioned a few times in the rumours. We'll find out for sure pretty soon, though.

But you shouldn't use your superheavies in normal games. Most of them are way too powerful for a normal game, especially if your opponent doesn't know they're coming. So you can only use them when you ask your opponent "hey, can I use my Baneblade" today, and you don't need a $50 book to do that. This is a product that has no apparent reason to exist besides GW getting more of your money.

This is a product that has no apparent reason to exist besides GW getting more of your money. We never needed a book that allows us anything to begin with. Allies, 2on2, 3on3, 1v1v1. Nevertheless its nice to have ... see the extremely fun multiplayer expansion for fantasy. I never played fantasy before but i HAD to try that out ... and it was a bucket of fun. You also shouldnt count buidings as burning and let the opponent setup the terrain to defend a position. Nevertheless its fun. And optional. There are a lot of people out there that are scared by houserules and if theres nothing official they tend to not play it that way. Now i can convince someone like that to play with superheavies in normal games backed up by official rules that make them feel comfortable. Additionally some people lack creativity or the understanding of rules to create their own. This is what these supplements are adressing in my eyes. Planetstrike and cities of death are still occasionally played in my club just because its fun.

Yeah that is how it is going to be . FW is a no go , PKZ is in . games are 1500-1999 which is the only difference I think . But then again I don't know anyone who actualy owns a super heavy here , maybe some of the realy old players , but everyone else has his army and that is it .

I kind of have to agree here. If we ever wanted to use the odd apoc level unit but not play apoc in full, my group would probably just house rules a 2000-3000pt game and gives you a limit for, say, one super heavy/garg. Something like that.

I'm actually looking forward to this expansion. I think it will be a great way to add something new to the status quo. I don't see why so many people are complaining, it's not like you have to play the expansion.

I don't think people are complaining about the expansion, but pointing out: 1.) Players who currently own/use super heavies in apocalypse can (and have) already been able to use them in narrative 40K with opponent's permission (It's a game after all. See Also: Battle Missions, Line Breaker scenario - 3 baneblades vs 1500 pts of the enemy). and 2.) Players who do not own super heavies, or do not wish to use them in smaller games, will flat-out refuse to do so regardless of a new expansion. Basically, while it's nice to have the option and there will probably be some fun missions in the book, this release will only cater to a select few unless they really somehow knock it out of the park, or make it an all-army supplement that anybody can tag into their army for tournament play if they wish. Now, if they create a plastic Harridan (as rumors say) I'm all for it. Realistically, i don't see that coming.

This will have a small niche of allowing people to 'dip' into the world of larger units without being forced, in the more fervent Apoc circles, to face an array of D-STR weapons ready to eat your face.
I remember when the plastic Baneblade came out people bought the hell out of them and started getting interested in Apoc. Unfortunately in our local group, FW was a well known and beloved source of Apoc models already. So when they showed up with that Baneblade and expected to wreck face with it, they were not nearly as happy with it after the game.
Some bought a couple more plastic superheavies like the Shadowswords and more Baneblades and started to enjoy it more...and some just sold theirs and went back to regular 40k.
This might have some appeal, but I don't see it catching on in any majority.

It could well be an all-army thing. Interested to see what the SoB get out of this, if anything. A few of the rumours regarding it have said that all armies will get access to at least one super-heavy from this. However, this could mean several armies just sharing the same super-heavy, but it'd still be access to a super-heavy, which is interesting regardless.
As for tourament play, that will of course depend entirely on the individual tournament. Some tournaments may ban this expansion from play.

It would be cool if IG got some D class weapons as emplacments . not moving av 13/14 with a D class weapon for 150-200pts could be useful to remove cover . They would be balanced by being unable to move and being 1-2 per army.

The Aquila Stronghold foots that bill. I think it's 150 points (but I have a terrible memory, so I could be wrong), but it's effectively AV15. If you got access to that, I think you'd get your wish.

There has been a rumor that FW stuff will become legal for normal 40k games. ie official.
at some point they have to say this is the case, I am guessing this might be that announcement.
as to arms race, the above mentioned rumor also includes fw stuff being linked to GWs main website

The rumors mentionted the use of the Revenant, which allows for D- STR weapons. Unless they only allow the Sonic Lance option, which seems odd for GW to go into a pick and choose upgrades instead of full models.

They could just leave D-Weapons off the list of upgrades that you can take, or have a nerf for them (S10, AP1 Small Blast for instance) instead.
Either way, I'm not assuming anything about this expansion as it could work very different than we expect and getting ones knickers twisted before you even know the actual rules is a bit silly.
