Hey, Dakka. I will possibly be playing against a friend of mine who just restarted 40K... with 30K Sons of Horus. We are only going to be playing about 750 pts. As stated in the title, I play Necrons. Normally, I play using foot-slogging Warriors and/or Immortals, backed up with Barges. However, our proposed 750 limit creates a bit of a challenge, especially since I don't normally field enough AP3 or lower weapons to combat MEQs. He, on the other hand, will be fielding foot-slogger Marines, with an Apothecary (I think) as an HQ choice. I think my main advantage is that he hasn't played since 4th Edition, so I have a better understanding of the rules. I have ready to field (AKA primed, at the very least):
Overlord
Lord
2 Crypteks
20-ish Warriors
20 Tesla Immortals
8-9 Scarab bases
a few Destroyers
Heavy Destroyer
Triarch Stalker
2 Anni Barges (can turn into CCBs)
3 Wraiths
Given this information, what can I expect? How can I counter with the units I have?

Given he is restarting the game, with a very expensive army as well, winning shouldn't really be your main motivation. If you *needed* to win it would be very easy for you to with those models. A list using both Anni Barges as well as the immortals (If you haven't made them up yet, make at least 5 deathmarks, they work very well with the cryptek) would hammer him down. That said, it won't be very fun for either of you. How you should play is giving him units to aim for, like a 20 man warrior blob, and make it hard for him to get at it. This helps teach him good tactics. What you can expect is lots of 3+ saves, and not much else. Maybe some assault (or whatever 30k version is) marines. Don't let him be a douche and use the Mortrait with duel plasma pistols ( BS 5, every hit causes an extra hit. Add prescience for a never ending stream of plasma that is sure to kill ANYTHING AV 13 or less) and just have a fun game. Only start to play competitive at 1k +, make sure he is into the game fully before you decide to bring out the big stuff

Its a pity that you don't have some Night Scythes and more Wraiths. A list with DLord, two units of Wraiths, Warriors or Immortals in Night Scythes, and Annihilation Barges can be a pain for CSM.

Thanks for the replies so far! I'll be sure to put up a battle report of the game afterwards.

At 750 you are at a pretty good advantage. 30k legions only start to work at higher point games. The cheapest troop choice is 150 points for 10 bolter marines and these marines can't even take heavy weapons or special weapons. After the hq, over half the points will be spent but with 0 anti tank. Just take your normal list of immortals, warriors, and barges and you will probably win. The mortrate hq cannot be take as the warlord and he cannot be targeted by blessings which is in the 30k faq, so he isn't too much to worry about at 750.
