Just want to confirm I'm doing this right, as I often use Shadow and mounted wizards.
Step 1, 6 dice Pit of Shades.
Step 2, Resolve Pit of Shades.
Step 3, Resolve Smoke and Mirrors, swapping my Wizard and my mounted BSB who hangs out on his own.
Step 4, Resolve Miscast.
Another question.
Can my shadow-wizard on an eagle/griffon swap places with my Dragon Mage?

Your order is correct.
And all that is needed to swap places is for the wizard and swapped model to be of the same unit type. So a Griffon riding wizard could indeed swap with a Dragon Prince.
Here is a little trick you can pull with that ability.
Charge an enemy unit with your Wizard, cast a spell from Shadow, and then swap with the Dragon Prince(or any other monster riding character) for epic shenanigans.

Yep seen that happen.
I have also seen it fail miserably as the unit needed the successful cast. Now the wizard was trapped in combat for the turn. Could not cast anymore to 'smoke and mirror' out, then the unit proceded to lose combat, run and get run down.
MWAHAHAHAHAHA..no more level 4 wizard.
Personally I'm not a fan of the all eggs in one basket combos. I think that play style is why so many hate 8th edition and rage quit.

I don't even rely on charging and then casting spells into my ensuing combats just for the chance that if my spells are ruined spectacularly I didn't just set up a bunch of guys to get run down. If I succeed in casting things are good but if I fail I just sent them all to their deaths. I'm honestly not entirely fond of till the next friendly magic phase spells for that very reason and somewhat to magic coming after charges.
That said what I do love is learning the phases and their order very well in a game and a variety of other factors. I mean I once forced a group of silver helms to panic in a certain direction through another group. They didn't panic the 2nd group but they were directly blocking a charge for the opposing player during their turn and charges come before rallies so he was forced to not charge his cavalry due to that awesome move. Sometimes learning where best to panic an enemy and what direction is incredibly helpful.

That's brilliant! I wouldn't even call shenanigans on it, it's a risky move to be sure and seems to really fit with the general "feel" of shadow magic.

Why not just cast something light that your opponent wont think of dispelling (like the lower level Misasma) to increase your chances of the swap?
I like the idea, but throwing 6 dice at pit in order to get this seems too risky for my liking on account of miscast/drawing dispel scroll/not having enough dice.

The problem is, if you have 2 characters riding monsters, odds are those are pretty much your only characters.
Where the shadow swap has shined for me is vampire counts. I've run a blender lord, and then 2 shadow vampire heroes (and a boat load of necromancers).
I can bounce the blender around to where he's needed pretty effectively.
