Subject: Tyranid players, biovores a must?

So the other day i got my butt kicked by a tau player who ended up with an objective in his "base". Basically he cornered off his deployment zone behind a aegis defense line, would go to ground for the 2+ cover save and then pulled marker lights off next round to fire at full bs. His deployment was spread out enough to block any deep strikes in not to mention a good amount of intercept. I've been playing nids for about a year and i've always liked my nids with a good amount of mc's heavier on the the assault side than shooting. I can honestly say i've hardly ever read a list that ran biovores, but from reading posts lately it sounds like people are telling me they are a must? Obviously they would have been great in this situation but the majority of the time i would say i'd rather spend the points on zoe's or hive guard if im looking for shooting. Any other thoughts on biovores? Is everyone else running them lately? I know it won't matter too much longer since the new codex is off in the horizon. Fyi i'm not a tournament player and just play for fun. My opponent is a friend who everyone knows to bring competitive lists and will tailor to fight other friends armys frequently.
Ohh Also I think biovores are kinda ugly to some of the cooler stuff in our codex. Personal opinion i know, but most of the ones i see painted seem to have a horrible time getting the teeth to look decent.

They are very good for their points and one of your few options to reach out and hit people across the table.
An important thing to remember when dealing with Aegis campers is cover is based on line of sight. So most of your MC shooting will deny the cover save due to their height.
If he gets really crazy with castling up in the corner you could consider some Mawlocs too.

Biovores are decent. Pretty effective at killing fire warriors. Mawlocs could do some damage too if you want to stick to MCs...

Well i gave him the cover save even when the trygon deep striked in next to the line. I thought about arguing but wasnt sure how far that would get me.

Yeah I could see that creating problems, getting that blast behind the defense line could shake things up though. What about Doom in a pod? Biovores would be cheaper though.

I tried the doom in pod, but they get cover saves against the soul sucking, so its large blast never had enough strength to do anything. Because of the lack of wounds from the cover save it was focused down the next turn.

Sometimes I like to change Doom's power for the Telepathy Primaries. Probably in this occasion it would have helped you.
As for the Biovores, they are great, but they aren't a must because they are infantry killers, something most Nids already are very good at.

So lets phrase it like this, how many of you are bringing biovores for your general or all comers list? Or is it, that if you know your opponent is bringing tau or ig you bring it just in case.

I have not used them in 6th but I agree they are becoming more and more an attractive option to go buy. A lot of players in my area are putting blobs of Tau and IG behind aegis (and why not). The only thing stopping me from picking 3 up is the new codex coming. I'm going to wait and see how that changes things up first.

I use them often and I find them to be well worth their points, in both straight killing and added tactical flexibility.

I take biovores and a mawloc in all my lists. They work fantastically.

I don't take them in my TAC lists. However, I wish I could find the points to do so.
The biggest problem is I'd have to sacrifice bodies out of my 30 strong Gargoyle unit.
