So, I ve bought Be'lakors dataslate. In there it introduces allied formations. As it says you can get an allied formation apart from main and allied detachment. So, to get things straight, I can take flying FW circus and allies csm with Be'lakor and drake and add a renegade vendetta from traitor ig codex as allies of convenience? That's how the rules work as I can read it. Anyone else? Am I correct or not?

Allied formations are a new thing and are similar to Apoc formations in that you're limited on what can be taken.

They're also going to be digital releases - there's a Tau Riptide + Broadside one out.

I ve downloaded the interactive ipad edition of be'lakor and I ve read about the tau dataslate. It doesn't state anywhere in it that you can't use the allied formation in normal games. It is completely legal in normal games, also it states that if a formation is referred as an apocalypse formation it can be used only in apocalypse games. For allied formation totally legal.

Right - so in your example in the OP which detachment would the formation be?

That's my point - there has to be a data sheet for there to be a formation.

RAW from Be'lakors dataslate:
Allied formations
"Formations do not count as your army's allied detachment, even if they are made up from units from a different codex to your primary detachment, and they do not stop you from taking allied detachment in the same army. However the levels of alliance rules from the warhammer 40k rulebook do apply to them and units chosen from a different codex in the same army." "for example if you included an ork formation in the same army as a primary detachment from codex:space marines, then the units from the two detachments would treat each other as desperate allies. However the ork formation would not stop you taking an allied detachment in the same army".

So can I add an allied formation vendetta from codex IG to my CD and CSM allies army?

Ok I think I m wrong. I ve read it all and now I m sure that allied formations are only rules posted in the new dataslates. Nothing more. You can't add anything from another codex, you can only use formations from the new digital releases.

ooh, these look neat. Crossing my fingers for a Cypher dataslate.

But to address the OP. Formations are yet another detachment that you can spend your points on but they don't have a FOC. The detachment will only consist of the models in the formation. The formations may only have the required models, or they may have additional optional models. Each formation will be its own detachment. Be'lakors is not a formation, he is a new HQ choice for the Chaos Space Marines and Chaos Deamons codices. Assuming the FW cisrus you mentioned is your primary detachment you can take an allied detachment of chaos space marines and the HQ of that allied detachment can be Be'lakor. You can not take an IG vendetta as far as I know, because there is no formation for a IG vendetta that I am aware of.

But, feel free to hold your breath. Formations seem like a slick way to sell us model sets. I don't collect Imperial guard, but I do love me some Vendettas. If they came out with a vendetta squadren (3 vendettas) as a formation I could take with my Dark Angels I'd probably go over to my FLGS and buy 3 kits.

I ve already added be'lakor to my list, and I m holding my breath for the next 23 releases. I cross my fingers even though I m totally impressed and happy with the csm+cd update. I wait for more epicness to come. Overreacted though, and didn't read the rules correctly about the formations..
