I was wondering, the wording on the command squad states that I may upgrade one vet to a champion, replacing his chainsword w/ a combat shield AND blade of caliban. does this not allow me to swap out my bolt pistol for a LC or some other at int. weapon before the upgrade? (using the C:SM argument here)

Don't have my books handy, but assuming the DA book does let a command squad vet replace his bolt pistol with a LC you have an entirely different issue. When you upgrade the vet to a champion does his war gear 'reset' to what is listed for a champion in the book or does he retain the war gear he had as a veteran. Both seem to be valid opinions on how the rules are intended to work. With out an FAQ we can't be certain. However the best guess on the intent right now comes from the ipad codex force builder for codex space marines. Latest revision if memory serves did not allow this sort of thing so
