Hi, I need help with building a Tau army. Do any Tau vets want to help out a new supporter of the Greater Good?

Start with a battleforce. Then decide how you want the army to look. Suit heavy, FW heavy, Gunline or mobile.

You've picked a good army. While Tau are one of the most competitive codices, the better reason to pick them as a beginner is they have lots of viable builds. You'll be able to test out different strategies and units.

A list of strong units, in no particular order:

Riptides
Crisis Commanders
Crisis Suits
Broadsides
Skyrays

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

as Barnowl stated The Current version of the Tau Battleforce is a GREAT place to start, right out of the box you have a field-able 500 point Army, that allows you as a player to customize many aspects of it to tailor what becomes your playing style. For under $100 the battlefoce allows you to field something like this:

HQ

Commander (using one of the Crisis Suits)

ELITES

XV8 Crisis Team - 2 x Suits
XV25 Stealth Team - 3 x Suits + Marker Light Drone

TROOPS

FW x 6
FW x 6

FAST ATTACK

Piranha
Drone Squad - 8 x Gun Drones

Now once you are ready to expand you can look many different directions based on what aspects of the Tau you enjoyed. But more troops both Kroot and Fire-Warriors should be in your first purchases after (or even with) your battlefoce, after that some Marker Light producers

Hope this helps out!

For STUFFFING!!!!!

I did so intentionally then. Pathfinders are inferior marker light platforms to marker drones. Piranhas are inferior fusion delivery systems to solo Crisis suits.

the marker/pathfinder thing is debatable, but that discussion's already been had - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/565836.page
And regarding piranhas, you're right - you don't take them for the fusion, you take 5 of them for the free gun drone squad and a fast unit that you can use to intercept unwanted assaults. Check out my piranha list - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/566046.page
