Now that Wolves have fliers are are they still a Mid level army? I can see them getting a little better now that they have ways of dealing with other flyers but I don't see them winning a GT anytime soon.

I dont see how a storm raven and two storm talons are going to really hold up against any number of other flyers that could be allied in.

Its a good option and you would have to build a list around it instead of just tacking it onto something.

Well, two talons and a raven is indeed a healthy number of fliers. It's definitely gonna help out. No hq or troops tax. What's not good about it?

Three fliers is three fliers my friend.

Three fliers that can engage four different targets, and royally mess up ground-based armor.

If storm talons are so good, why don't I see them more often in army lists? I can understand some of the bennifits of the storm raven. There are several SW units that would do well inside it. But the talons?

Because Vendettas and Night Scythes are better. Also, Stormtalons are only really good vs enemy fliers. Their air-to-ground damage is outshined by other C:SM options, and quad-guns or Double TL-Auto dreads fill the AA role while being more durable and threatening the ground comparably.

Biggest reason though? Land Speeder Typhoons.

Well, don't bother with 3 flyers in games less than 2000 pts. Too expensive and air-to-ground support is not good enough.

Stormravens are only only really viable if you're using them as Anti-Air (with TL Las, obviously), Anti-AV 13+ or an assault vehicle. Preferably multiple. Their disadvantage is that they take up a Heavy Support slot, and they're terrible anti-infantry and inefficient against light vehicles.

Stormtalons... are what you take when you don't have any free Heavy Support slots.

But honestly, I have to agree with the sentiment that you really shouldn't take this formation if you have easy access to the better fliers (Necrons, CSM, IG). I could see it taken by armies like Sisters of Battle that have no access to useful fliers.

Marine Storm Wing doesn't take up any slots.

I know. Let me clarify.

My point is that you take Storm Talons only because they take up Fast Attack, not Heavy Support. They're really not that good on their own, it's just that they avoid oversaturation of the Heavy Support slot. So taking them for no slot isn't really an advantage because you're not going to be taking other Fast Attack.

However, for the Storm Raven, the SM codex is overloading on the Heavy Support slot, as mentioned. So being able to take them as slotless AND still have them transport troops is a big deal. If you're going to take advantage of it, of course.

Storm Talons would so awesome if it could escort other DS units such as drop pods or terminators.

I know Drop podding dreads would love the back up firepower. At least I know mine wish they had it.

okay, so black library noob here-I just downloaded it (and a bunch of other things) now I tried downloading the epubs and mobi files but they wont view on my computer, is there a certain program i need to download or something? How do you all view these?

You need an ebook reading program for ePubs, or an Amazon Kindle account for Mobi files.

As an aside, I'm going to take a moment, put on my headlamp, and pry this gift horse's mouth open.

I admit that I'm one of those folks who always loved having Stormravens in his Blood Angel army. The changes to combat squadding mean I can put 2 Tactical squads in 2 Stormravens and helocast 4 scoring units onto the table as I come screaming in on an attack run. The changes to dangerous terrain mean they'll even survive it.

Having a Stormraven in the army that I can't mount infantry in kind of grinds my gears. It's almost to the point that I'm contemplating allying in a Lvl1 librarian and a 10 man Tactical squad of Iron Hands just to dragoon their way onto the board.

On the other hand, having 2 Stormtalons is win in a bucket. They're the answer to the Helldrake problem that the army really needed. Being able to overfly and fire 4 S6 shots into the rear of opposing flyers is pretty sweet.
